YOU GUYS.
So, I KNOW that Stage Beauty has some INCREDIBLE flaws. We watched the first half hour in my Shakespeare in Performance class today as an intro to Restoration Shakespeare, and I learned about even more historical innacuracies that are in the film than I was previously aware of.
And I KNOW that the film invents method acting about two and a half centuries too early.
And I KNOW that the film says that all questioning of gender and sexuality can be solved via the healing properites of Claire Danes's Magical Vagina, and seems to assign categories of 'straight' and 'gay' that just didn't exist in that period and asserts a culture of heteronormativity.
I KNOW THIS.
... BUT I LOVE IT STILL.
LIKE, I REALLY DO. I think Billy Crudup is AMAZING and a HOTASS, ESPECIALLY in various stages of female getup (BOYS IN SKIRTS, PEOPLE. YOU KNOW I HAVE A THING.). I love that it puts out there questions of transgender issues and the performance of gender in society, as well as the ways in which the layers of performance in a theatrical context mixes things up.
THIS MOVIE OVERCOMES MY IRRATIONAL HATRED OF CLAIRE DANES. THAT IS HOW MUCH I LOVE IT. And I also get to play Spot the Representatives from the Seventeen Working Actors in Britain Guild! WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE. PLENTY. I LOVE IT.
