Were it not for women and gold, there would be no damnation

I kidnapped westerly today and drove down to Staunton to see The Revenger's Tragedy at the Blackfriar's Playhouse. Heaven help them, there were only about 15 people in the audience, but I am THRILLED to say that they were actually quite good today, much improved upon the last performances I saw there in the summer of 2006. I forget how much I ADORE this play- it's so deliciously and unrelentingly dark and twisted.

I was amused that the dress of the court was so clearly modeled after what can only be termed the 'space pimp' look of the film with Derek Jacobi and Christopher Eccleston (as well as Marc Warren and Eddie Izzard, but hey, who's counting?). This, in addition to the crazy club atmosphere of the National's production I saw in July (they had both a live DJ AND a live countertenor- it was MAGICAL), makes me begin to think that there's a strange sickness that possesses directors and refuses to let them NOT modernize the setting of Jacobean revenge plays... CURIOUS.

Anyway, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll head back down before the end of the Actors' Renaissance Season in March and see more, especially since they'll be staging Henry VI Part I- how can I resist the delightful bitchery of the Houses of York and Lancaster?
