ALAS!

My careful balancing act of two choral seasons stead is coming to a CRASHING collapse next season! Not one, but TWO conflicting performance weeks AND another CAS Christmas concert series that lands two of three concerts when I want to be home in Lake Charles.

*shrieks of dismay*

If you're a new addition here, let me explain: I'm a choir junkie. I really can't help- since I was in fourth grade, I've only NOT been in a choir for the four months I was abroad in college and that was TORTURE. Summer hiatus is bad enough, but that was almost my undoing. So when I moved to DC, part of the draw was knowing that there were ample choirs to audition for that would meet my needs and at least one would probably deign to take me. In the end, both groups that I fancied (the Cathedral Choral Society of the National Cathedral and the Choral Arts Society of Washington) selected me and it's by the grace of the muses that their schedules have allowed me to do both. The only big conflict was last season and it was easily handled- I went with the CCS and sang Britten's 'War Requiem' and CAS showed no hard feelings about missing their 40th Anniversary Concert. Being in two choirs often makes my life unduly hectic, but the amount of music is just about right. I'm in love with both conductors and couldn't bear to part with either.

But now this. We don't have rehearsal schedules and we don't even have programs yet for the CAS subscription series, but we do have all the performances and Here There Be Conflicts. The first CCS concert is with the Winchester Cathedral Choir and it's Paul McCartney's 'Ecce cor meum'- and then two days later is the first CAS concert. Rehearsal schedules would NEVER allow me to do both, there's just no hope (since attendence at performance week practises is required to sing the concert). The laughable one is the final concerts of each season- smack on May 18th. *HEADDESK* The fact that I predict this to be the Haverford commencement is beside the point. Then there's the CAS Christmas concerts- they do three and I really only want to be in town for the first (the second and third are on Dec 23 and 24- NO WAY).

Now, here's the problem. CCS seems pretty loose with their season, in that once you're in, you're in for whichever concerts you choose to sing. I think. So telling them I can't do one or the other isn't a big deal, I reckon. CAS, not so much. They're much more strict about such things and might well not invite me back if I ask to miss more than one subscription concert. As it stands, I might potentially be asking to bow out of THREE.

What complicates things is that I don't know what the CAS programs are. I've never heard the McCartney, but singing with the WCC sounds like WACKY FUN. And the May concert? Elijah, which I've never heard but everyone swears is fantastic and there's a slim possibility we'd do with with Bryn Terfel and COME ON PEOPLE, BRYN TERFEL!!!!! How can I miss that?? And the Christmas concerts are just sticky for CAS- I might could ask to do one of three, but that seems uncool.

Obviously, I have some time- I don't sign any commitment forms until the end of May, but still. :( I hatehatehate to miss out on ANY of it and I DO NOT want to pick and choose between the joys of Norman Scribner and Reilly Lewis (and Scott and Todd!). *WAILS AT FATE*

Sigh. We'll see. I just had to get all that out and have a good sulk. For now, it's off to see 'Titus Andronicus', the perfect cure for the petulant mood!
