Chapter 4

“Hey Siwon, Sungmin, can I come in?” Kyuhyun had already walked in without knocking and Siwon and Sungmin looked up from their lunch meeting where they had been going over the latest news from Korea.

Sungmin let out a big sigh as Siwon laughed. “Sure, what is it?”

Kyuhyun waved the papers that he had in his hand. “See these?” He waited for both of the to nod before he continued. “This is a memo I sent out last week about a meeting with a bunch of European companies that we are having at the end of the month.” Sungmin and Siwon stared at him blankly and Kyuhyun let out a sigh, rustling the papers again. “End of the month. As in four days from now. Neither of you have gotten back to me about what’s going on. I’ve made schedules of the events, and Zhou Mi has everyone in hotels, and Henry’s set up some fancy translator, but none of us know what the hell is going on.” He shook the papers again. “Kinda your roles. Make the presentations. Or at least tell us what you want to talk about so we can make them. Ring any bells?”

Siwon held up his hands in a gesture of surrender. “I get it. We get it.” He shifted through the papers on his desk, looking for the memo. Sungmin found it first and he handed it over with a smile and Siwon thanked him before turning back to Kyuhyun. “We will have the bulk of it written out by tonight. I’m sorry we forgot.” Kyuhyun took a dramatic sniff and Siwon added, “and I’m sorry that you’ve been pulling your hair over this. We’ll treat you to dinner when this is finished.”

Kyuhyun couldn’t stop the smile that cracked onto his face as he nodded, turning to leave. “I’ll hold you to that.”

Siwon looked at Sungmin and then dropped his head on the desk. “I had completely forgotten about this meeting.”

Sungmin chewed on his bottom lip. He figured it would be redundant to say he had forgotten too, because it was obvious he had. Or else he would have reminded Siwon. “Well I guess we should get working on it now.”

Siwon let out a sigh and reached for his cell phone. “I’ll cancel dinner plans for tonight then.”

Sungmin felt the pit of his stomach warm briefly at the reminder that they had plans. Not a straight up date, but he could pretend because it definitely different than their normal dinners. Siwon had actually made reservations, and seemed unsure when extending the invitation. Definitely different from the other dinners they had had in the past two months Sungmin had been in China.

“It’s okay, we’ll just go out after this is over and done with.”

Siwon returned his smile. “Of course. Now, what are we going to do about this?”

So really, it was all Kyuhyun’s fault. He was the one who made the joke after all.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” he had said when he walked in on him and Sungmin having one of their lunch meetings a couple days after Sungmin had joined them in China.

Siwon hadn’t thought anything of it, at the time, because, yeah sure, the words had been laced with innuendo but they were laced with innuendo whenever he asked Henry to pick him up noodles for lunch. And Siwon liked to imagine that there was nothing sexual about noodles going on in the office. Or at all really.

So he hadn’t thought too much into it. Even with the way Sungmin had blushed and not made eye contact with him, even after he had explained, “oh that’s just the way Kyuhyun is. You get used to it.”

It hadn’t even crossed his mind the second time Kyuhyun had said something. Nor the third. Nor when Henry had joined him to ask them out for drinks, and the two of them had made kissy faces at one another before collapsing into each other when Siwon had told them, “no, Sungmin and I are going out to dinner alone.”

When it had finally clicked, and he didn’t want to say he woke up one day and suddenly realized that Kyuhyun may have a point about the two of them dating (but then he’d be lying), he was in the shower. He didn’t tell Kyuhyun that though when he had casually asked him if he thought that Sungmin might possibly like him.

“You’re an idiot,” Kyuhyun had responded, before wrapping his arm around Siwon’s shoulder and leading him into the main lobby - luckily Sungmin free - and announced to Zhou Mi and Henry that he had finally put two and two together and gotten four.

“So you two finally are dating?” Henry had asked.

“Please remember that your office’s walls are made of glass,” Zhou Mi had said.

Siwon had shook his head, and tried to argue. “No, it’s not like that. I had just wanted to know if maybe,” he had paused and Henry arched an eyebrow.

“Maybe what? You should let him down?” His look had been hard and Siwon had felt extremely judged.

“No, it’s just…”

“You like him though, right?” Zhou Mi had finally turned away from his computer and had looked at Siwon with such earnest eyes that Siwon felt like replying with anything other than “yes” would equal kicking a puppy.

“Well, I hadn’t thought of it until now,” he had admitted, and that set off a round of explanations throughout the lobby and Siwon had winced. He only saving grace had been that Sungmin had come in from the lobby, and luckily all three of them liked him enough not to embarrass him in front of Sungmin.

That didn’t stop any of them from offering their input from then on, every time Siwon was alone with one of them.

“Try flowers.” Zhou Mi had offered throughout that first week.

“Should I start carrying wet naps?” Kyuhyun had asked, and begun offering them to Sungmin.

Henry had even whispered that Kyuhyun kept the condoms in his bottom drawer in the middle of a meeting, and Siwon had made an ass out of himself when he had stood up and shouted, “why does he have condoms at the office?!”

Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi had found it hilarious. Sungmin had merely tilted his head, because he had had the self-preservation to say it in Chinese, and Sungmin’s Chinese seemed to expand to basic table manners and computer related things (luckily).

The thing was, up until about a week ago, Siwon wasn’t even sure if he really did like Sungmin, like that. Sure he had had the epiphany, but that didn’t mean he should pursue it. After all, he knew he was miserable in a relationship. Geng had made that very clear when they had tried the whole being an item, and, well then there was Yeunja. And Sungmin didn’t deserve some half assed attempt at a relationship just because Kyuhyun liked to make innuendo.

They had a good friendship: going out to dinner, movies. They worked very well together. Why risk that?

“You’re an idiot.” Henry had looked at him with a blank face when he tried to complain and bounce ideas off of him. When Siwon had only stared back at him Henry sighed and explained. “He likes you. We all can tell. He’s here isn’t he? He came after you. It’s like some crap drama Mimi watches. If he had known he probably would have stopped you at the airport. But the point is he’s here, and he’s still here. Two months later. Personally I think he should be canonized.”

“But I’m not sure if I like him,” Siwon had whispered his biggest fear out loud for the first time.

It hurt that it was met with laughter. “You like him.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Because if you didn’t, it would be easy.”

So he had made dinner plans, after agonizing for a day. He had asked Sungmin out, trying to be calm and suave and like he knew he was wanted. And Sungmin had said yes, of course, because when it came down to it he had chickened out and made it seem like any other dinner that they would go out to.

And then it had gotten cancelled, and Siwon wasn’t sure if he could go through the trauma of asking again. Because what if this time Sungmin realized what was going on? What if he turned him down? What if everyone was wrong and Sungmin didn’t want him?

Siwon almost wanted to call Heechul and ask for advice but he wasn’t that desperate. He didn’t need to be laughed at. Not yet.

So instead they worked diligently, trying to get ready for this meeting. Sungmin was all professionalism when they worked, and Siwon couldn’t do anything but admire him. He was put together and ready to help.

Siwon knew that he was the majority of the reason the entire meeting was going to go off without a hitch.

It did end up going off without a hitch. Three days of running around with their heads cut off; with Henry speaking more English than he had in the past two years, and the rest of them stumbling to catch up, but they managed it, and by the end all the men had been sent back to their hotels and the five of them had headed out to celebrate.

Well currently it was the four of them. Sungmin had run back to his apartment to shower and change. Siwon thought it might be a good idea but Zhou Mi had wrapped an arm around his shoulder and promised Sungmin that they would have him knee deep in liquor by the time he joined.

Siwon wondered if Zhou Mi had been talking to Sungmin behind his back.

“To being amazing!” Henry cheered, holding up his drink, and Zhou Mi and Kyuhyun clinked back in response. Siwon was late to the toast because he kept looking at the door, but he finally raised his own glass.

Kyuhyun nudged his shoulder with a laugh. “Don’t worry, he’ll be here soon. Just remember, we’re in public so don’t be too amorous.”

Siwon shoved him playfully back, trying to pull his eye away from the door but they kept going back there.

How long did it take to get dressed and join them?

Sungmin had gotten out of the shower to see a text message on his phone. He ignored it while getting dressed, figuring it was one of them demanding he hurry up. Possibly Henry, because his alcohol tolerance was zero and he liked to drunk text much too often Sungmin had learned. So he didn’t actually know that Sooyoung was in town until he had grabbed his keys and was out the door.

His face broke out into a smile as he read the text though, and he quickly responded.

Of course I’ll join you. You’re my favourite for a reason ♥

Siwon was on his third drink when he realized that Sungmin was taking too long. He had tried to nurse his drinks, make them last longer, but Kyuhyun kept demanding for round after round, and he already had two more drinks waiting for him. He pulled out his phone and debated between calling and texting. If Sungmin was lying in a ditch neither would be very effective, but calling seemed more desperate.

Maybe it actually wasn’t too long. Siwon tried to do the math. Twenty minutes in the shower. Fifteen minutes for travel home. Twenty-five to get here. He shook his head. The math was too hard for him right now and he opened his phone, pressing the call button.

It went directly to Sungmin’s voicemail.

Siwon stared at the phone and then sent a text. Short, simple, and totally not needy.

Where are you?

Sooyoung was with her friend, one Sungmin hadn’t seen in quite some time. He smiled, getting into the booth across from them.

“Sooyoung. Tiffany.” He greeted them both and laughed as Sooyoung reached out her both her hands, making grabby motions.

“Where’s my kiss? Get over here oppa!”

He grabbed hold of her hand and stood up, leaning over to kiss her cheek, and then Tiffany’s cheek. “Is Jessica with you?”

Tiffany let out a sigh, rubbing Sungmin’s cheek in thought before answering. “No, she’s in L.A. But I’m here, and so is Sooyoung. So be happy.”

Sungmin grinned as he sat back down. “Couldn’t be happier. Two beautiful ladies, a good week at work, wine on the way? I’m in heaven,” he said with a laugh.

Siwon had come to the conclusion that Sungmin had ditched them around the time Kyuhyun had convinced Henry to start singing karaoke without any music. He knew he had brought down the mood almost immediately, because Zhou Mi had wrapped his arms around him and taken away the alcohol.

“Maybe he passed out. He has been working very hard.”

Siwon’s eyes went wide at the thought of Sungmin passing out in the shower, and then drowning. He stood up immediately and Zhou Mi had to use all his strength to get Siwon back into the chair.

“Hey, you can go get him tomorrow. Let the poor guy sleep,” Zhou Mi said with a laugh.

Siwon realized no one was thinking as darkly as he was, and that probably meant there was nothing to worry about. He let out a sigh, and tried to drink the water Zhou Mi set in front of him, tried to focus on Henry screaming out the words to some Madonna song while Kyuhyun egged him on, but he kept going back to Sungmin.

“I think I’m going to turn in,” he finally said, opening his wallet to leave some bills on the table. Henry didn’t notice him leaving, and Kyuhyun only waved at him as he took one of the bills from the pile Siwon had left. He figured Kyuhyun was going to try and shove it in Henry’s belt.

He knew it was a bad idea, and if he had mentioned it to Zhou Mi he would have told him no, but he walked to Sungmin’s apartment. He had a key, so if Sungmin didn’t answer he could just open the door, and check to make sure he wasn’t dead on the shower floor.

Part of him mentioned that entering the apartment himself was creepy, but Siwon ignored it because if Sungmin thought it was creepy he could use the excuse that he was drunk. That thought properly in his mind, he had no problem knocking heavily on the door once he got there. And only some trouble getting the key into the door when Sungmin didn’t answer after so many knocks.

The apartment was empty. Empty and dark.

Siwon collapsed on the couch in worry.

He should call someone. Call Sungmin again. Call the police. But he couldn’t. His hands were shaking and he was suddenly finding it hard to breathe. Sungmin could be literally anywhere. And Siwon didn’t know where to begin.

“We have to get going oppa~” Sooyoung said, laughing even as she got looks from the other patrons as she leaned over and wrapped her arms around Sungmin’s shoulders. “I’m so glad that you came out with us. Are you sure you’re business partners won’t get mad?”

Sungmin laughed, kissing her cheek. “Of course not. They’ll understand. We go drinking enough.”

Her face lit up and she squeezed his shoulder. “Well you look happy and healthy, and that’s all that matters. I love you so much Sungmin,” she said it smiling, and she threw her head back in laughter, as if she couldn’t contain the emotion to just the words.

Sungmin’s smile got a bit wider and he pulled her back in for another hug. “I love you too Sooyoung. It was good seeing you. Give me warning next time though! I’d love to show you off to my business partners.”

She waved her hand laughing, as Tiffany came back in saying she had gotten a taxi. “They wouldn’t know how to handle me.” And with that she let Tiffany drag her out of the bar, both of them giggling.

Sungmin shook his head and followed after, planning on grabbing a taxi of his own back to his apartment. He’d check his phone on the ride back. Maybe Henry had finally started drunk texting him, preferably with pictures of Siwon passed out. Sungmin knew he would be the first to go down out of the four of them.

Sungmin smiled to himself as he finally grabbed a taxi and directed it back to his apartment. It had been a very good night, and tomorrow maybe he would ask Siwon out, to make up for the dinner they had missed. The only thing that made him frown was the fact that when he pulled out his phone there were no texts from Henry, just three missed calls from Siwon.

He opened his phone and immediately called Siwon back.

It took two rings before Siwon picked up, sounding lost.

“Sungmin?”

“Hey, what’s up?”

“Where are you?” He sounded like he was torn between relief, exhaustion and anger.

“I just caught a taxi. I’m headed back to my apartment. Don’t tell me you guys are done already,” Sungmin said with a laugh.

“It’s been six hours Sungmin.”

Sungmin was quiet for a moment, taking in the way Siwon said it. “Were you worried about me?”

Siwon let out a breath and Sungmin could hear it over the phone. “Just a little. You never showed up.”

“Where are you?”

Siwon laughed, and laughed, and laughed. “Sitting on your couch. I thought. I came by, because Zhou Mi had said you might have passed out, so I thought you might have passed out in the shower and were bleeding out on the floor.”

“No. I was just,” he paused to nod at the taxi driver that this was the right turn. “Sooyoung was in town. She texted me while I was leaving.”

“Oh.”

And then Siwon went quiet. Sungmin clicked his tongue for a moment, not knowing what to say. He wasn’t sure what Siwon wanted him to say. Sorry probably. “Listen, I’ll be home soon. Just stay there, alright. Then you’ll see for yourself that my beautiful face is in tact okay.”

“I thought you had died,” Siwon whispered into the phone and Sungmin couldn’t stop the nervous chuckle that escaped his mouth.

“It was only six hours Siwon.”

“You didn’t get in touch, what was I supposed to think? You weren’t home.”

“Well don’t be so morbid next time okay?” Sungmin didn’t stop his laugh this time. “I’m almost there. Turn on some lights and get me some food alright. I’m starving.”

Siwon agreed and Sungmin hung up the phone with a sigh. He was quiet for the rest of the ride, and he half expected Siwon to be waiting for him outside his apartment. He wasn’t though, and Sungmin slowly walked up to his apartment. He wasn’t sure what to expect, because he hadn’t even considered this happening. His mind was racing and he hoped that a fight wasn’t brewing. Because he would have words if a fight broke out.

Siwon was holding a plate of food for him when he opened the door and Sungmin looked at him for a moment before taking the food carefully.

“Thanks.”

Siwon stared at him for a moment and then let out a laugh. “I should go.”

“Siwon, wait.”

He already had on his shoes, though, and was grabbing his coat from the couch. “I’m an idiot,” he was muttering and Sungmin didn’t understand why he was saying that.

“No you aren’t,” was his witty retort and Siwon shook his head.

“I shouldn’t have stopped by. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Siwon, wait,” Sungmin called again, and he grabbed hold of Siwon’s shoulder as he tried to walk past him. “What’s the matter?”

Siwon was frozen for a moment, and he slowly looked at Sungmin. Looked him up and down, and his eyes were locked on Sungmin’s lips. “I didn’t know where you were.”

“I’m here. I’m sorry for worrying you. Now sit down.” He let out a nervous laugh as he spoke because it was better than focusing on the fact that Siwon was staring at his lips.

“I can’t. I need to go,” Siwon said and Sungmin couldn’t understand why he was so desperate to leave.

“Listen I don’t think you are weird for being worried about me, so don’t worry alright? Now sit down.” Sungmin said it as forceful as he could, and then Siwon was grabbing his shoulder and pulling him flush against him.

He was kissing him, hard and fast and then he was letting him go.

“I need. To go.”

“No. No you don’t.”

Sungmin pulled him back for another kiss, and it was spectacular because he had wanted this since he had practically met this man. He hadn’t thought he would get it though. Not once he had found out about Yeunja.

Siwon was the one to break the kiss, and he was panting, his hand creeping around Sungmin’s waist. “We need to talk.”

“Yes,” Sungmin agreed. “But not tonight. Tonight, we do this.” He kissed him again.
