I'm listening to a CBC story of a refugee family who, b/c they were on a CBC story a year ago, were sponsored to come to Canada, including a furnished apartment, with discounted rent, and pre-arranged jobs/school. All of this done by regular, everyday people inspired to do what they can to accomplish something amazing for a few people. Conversely, the small act on one persons's part, taking my cd's, has a disproportionate effect on my life. Small actions with big consequences.
I think that people are more than willing, and even eagre, to give time, money, and goods, if they know where its going, and who its helping. This is the personal connection. For my part, I have many things I don't use any more, but am holding on to till I find them a good home. Conversely, people can be incredibly resistant to change that results in small inconveniences, if they don't see the negative impact their actions are having on others.
Make it real. Make it personal. Then people will bother to stop and think about what they're doing, or not doing.
