Everybody should know "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," but there's a surprisingly large population (of unwashed heathens) who don't. Find a good cover band version (The Beatles are fine, but lack punch) and you can all learn it together. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is in that same vein.
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a terrible choice. It will get old by the second verse, except for ONE PERSON, who will want to hear it every twenty minutes. Make sure you don't have access to it. This goes double for "Livin' on a Prayer."
It's fun to hear people try to stumble through "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It."

You are right for the first two. They can get annoying fast. We didn't Start the Fire and It's the End of the World as We Know It are good choices. I'm thinking perhaps a You Give Love a Bad Name and Love Shack might also be included. Even if people don't always know the verses, they all sound in on the chorus!
