Its been a busy couple of days. Last night my Rhetoric and Poetics of Mortality in 17th Century Lit. class made a fairly spur of the moment decision to head to Sarasota for the free performance of Hamlet put on by the touring company of
the American Shakespeare Center (formerly the Shenandoah Shakespeare Company). I saw a production of The Taming of the Shrew about six or seven years ago at their beautiful reproduction of
Blackfriar's Playhouse in Stanton Virginia. While the ambience at New College's confernce center certainly wasn't up to the previous experience, the performance was excellent with very few exceptions. They played up the comedic moments which juxtaposed in what felt like a pretty authentic way with the tragic elements. In general, well done.
This morning I tagged along with Erika and a surprisingly well-behaved horde of students to see
Body Worlds at the Museum of Science and Industry. I saw the original exhibition when it hit London, back in 2002 and was pretty astonished. Seeing it again refreshed that feeling completely. Anyone who gets a chance (and isn't squeemish) should do their best to go if given the chance, it really does demonstrate how amazing the human body really is.
And then it was study and class. Bleak House a-go-go!
