Dear Community Partners,

CRIME PREVENTION ADVISORY DURING THE CHINESE NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS

With the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays, Police would like to advise the public

to remain vigilant against crime as they go about celebrating the festive season.

2 If you are going on a vacation:

a. Install good quality locks and grilles to secure your gates, doors and windows;

b. Do not leave large amounts of cash or jewellery at home;

d. Suspend delivery of newspapers and/or publications for the period;

e. Ask your neighbours to help keep an eye on your premises;

f. Call '999' immediately if suspicious behaviour, such as attempts to break into houses or

setting items on fire, is observed

3 If you are shopping at crowded areas:

a. When travelling in a crowded place, be wary of anyone bumping into you;

b. Check your valuables when it happens;

c. Avoid exposing cash, valuables or jewellery in public areas;

d. Ensure that your bag is properly secured while shopping or walking;

e. Never leave your valuables unattended.

4 Phone Scams

Members of public should be aware of the ongoing phone scams. Culprits are

continually devising new variations to dupe victims of their money.

a) Kidnap Scams

Culprits demand a ‘ransom’ for the safe release of a loved-one. One may hear cries for

help in the background. If you receive such a call, try to contact your loved ones

immediately. Should repeated attempts fail, seek assistance from the police.

b) Lottery Scams

Culprits ask for an advance payment of ‘administrative fees’ to claim a grand prize in an

overseas lottery. Ignore such calls as such offers are too good to be true.

c) Impersonation Scams

Culprits impersonate police officers or court officials to instill fear into victims to transfer

money to exonerate themselves from non-existing criminal cases. More details can be

found in the SPF website at www.spf.gov.sg or www.cad.gov.sg.
