This is why I love Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt:

"People love hearing terrible details of news tragedies.
One, it's titillating like a horror movie.
Two, it makes them feel like a good person because they care about a stranger.
Three, it makes people feel safe that it did not happen to them."

I watched the whole thing in a sitting or two and have watched it a few times. I really enjoy the early episodes but towards the end when they just try making fun of my state all the time....it gets annoying.

I read a good criticism that the show while the show good at making fun of how white people think about black people, it then goes off and makes fun of the Vietnamese language with impunity.

Its your fault for having such lame bodegas. Stock some poppers and loose tuna. But none of that fancy Greek yogurt and UNexpired meat. That's just gentrification in the making.

I saw some criticism, but I wasn't sure if what I read I'd have considered to be good. There was the joke about Dong's name (which was more so a joke/satire about how what is normal in one culture isn't normal in another). Thinking back, I didn't see much that really seemed offensive about that story line and the character is an overall fairly positive portrayal.

I actually had to stop watching another fairly popular show (Two Broke Girls) in part due to the constant racist portrayals of Poles.

It's just the making fun of Vietnamese having the same word for random things. But the "6 Whining Americans" Friends theme was great!

I have watched 2BB in years.

But the chef is the only good thing about that show! Oh wait. Oleg is Ukrainian. Just as well as sexual harassment went the way of MASH. And Making fun of Poles went away with Archie Bunker. What's up with that.

I thought that Oleg was Russian, but it has been a while since I saw the show.

You'd be surprised, but I heard stupid Polish jokes a enough that I remember them. There was one apparently on Jimmy Kimmel a few years ago.

Even now there still is xenophobic Polish things occasionally on tv or in the news. I actually came across someone on a news program a couple of years ago bringing up a story a colleague someone had told them that Poles are antisemitic and get it "from their mother's milk". Plus there is the "Polish death camps"- controversy that the President stepped in a few years back and then again with the FBI director earlier this year.

I wish making fun or being derogatory towards us had gone out with Archie Bunker. It sees to still raise its terrible head every so often.

It's probably one of those things that's easier to notice when you're tuned to it. I'm privileged, so maybe I'll notice it now. My wife is from Newfoundland -- the citizens of which were always the butt of jokes in my youth. I'm not even clear if Newfie is pejorative.
