Long overdue, as usual.
On Monday night (March 1st), John cooked us dinner. I'm not gonna lie, he was my ace in the hole. Antoine was incredible, and I already knew that Ethan was a natural born chef from past experiences. I was expecting John to bring down the standard at least a little to take some of the pressure off of me. The douchebag had to go out and cook an incredible dinner though. Tuesday, Kelsey and I went for another one of our walks. We ended up going past the meadows and pretty far into a student/young professional looking residential area. I sincerely hope that regardless of where I am, I'll always have a walking buddy. Potential point of conflict: I've already got my long walk and short walk friends at Northeastern...fitting in a third one, oh man that sounds challenging.
Wednesday, we went to a tea and cocktail place over by the harbor, though we didn't get to sea (aha) any water. I continued my tradition of getting the girliest sounding and/or looking drink possible :-D The waitstaff was unusually friendly, and the place had a really pleasant vibe. On Thursday, I decided to explore the far ends of the city by going for another obnoxiously long run (75 minutes, this time). I've been dying to see portobello beach (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portobello,_Edinburgh) and had planned on going there on Saturday. In the process of discovering a new area of town, I came across a sign pointing toward portobello, so to portobello I ran. It was stunning! They have an arcade, a couple of diners, and a pretty long boardwalk. I didn't venture too far down, as I wanted to save some excitement for Saturday, but what I saw left me hungering with anticipation. That night, I decided to skip a whiskey tasting in order to work on a project. Naturally, I ended up doing almost no work.
The weekend featured spending too much money, and involved far too little sleep. March is fjfjgfkjgf essay and project time for most kids, including myself. Unfortunately, I lack the ability to focus on schoolwork unless there's direct pressure on me. I have crazy amounts of work due, and will be hating myself shortly. I'm content with this choice. The others made the choice to be far more responsible and therefore remained adamant on staying in. It was just three of us on Friday, but the night turned out pretty swell regardless. We went to a really nice young professional pub (5 pounds a drink...) and then to a Spanish punk show in a separate pub located (literally) right under the one we had just visited. The band (13 Bats) was mediocre, but they had great stage presence and the crowd (us included) got really into it.
Ethan cooked us his amazing Chinese dinner, which gives Alex and me the herculean task of matching his (and the others') performances. That night, Maggie and I failed at dragging everyone else out with us. We ended up at the Banshee Labyrinth (
http://www.thebansheelabyrinth.com/), an alternative pub with a really sweet atmosphere. It was packed with studded jackets, mohawks, and dyed hair. Drinks were around 5 pounds again...wahhh.
Sunday was lovely! Kaitlin, Carolyn, Rob and I, went on an international student trip to a high ropes course (
http://www.goape.co.uk/). They gave us a quick demo, and sent us off to monkey around on our own, which is bananas by US standards. Granted, you'd have to be an idiot and not follow directions in order to get seriously injured, but the option was definitely there considering how high up we were without supervision. There were obstacles, zip lines, and all sorts of other fun stuff! Also, I'm terrified of heights... That night, I read about the Stockholm school of economic thought. (Photo stolen from Kaitlin, I'm at the very top of the platform)
I had my 9AM on Monday after a relatively sleepless weekend, so I wasn't mentally there for most of the day. Tuesday, Kaitlin and I got these sweet (no pun intended) pancakes at a local drinking establishment in honor of pancake day. Stacey dropped by that night on her way back from St. Andrews. I grossly underestimated how long it took to travel between the two cities and ended up relaxing outside waiting for her bus for an hour or two. It was nice to see a face from home, even if it was a face I barely knew and had almost never conversed with. We (plus Kaitlin and Maggie) drank bundles of tequila and went out for a night on the town. This plus the hard cider plus the vodka at the club = third time Georgiy has been drunk in Scotland. Stacey had an 8 AM flight so the morning was a little rough.
Starting the walk to the bus stop at 6AM, I opened the door to an unexpected blizzard. On my way back, the snow stopped, and an hour later vanished without a trace. I came home, napped, and then spent the rest of yesterday doing absolutely nothing. That's a lie actually. I volunteered at the isc, went for a long run and got plane tickets to visit chocolate bear, bestie, and wifey in Spain! Not bad for a few hours of sleep. -$109 :-( but oh man. Madrid, to Salamanca, to Madrid, to Valencia :-D I still need to figure out where to go for week two. I want somewhere warm, with a beach, and historically significant (suggestions appreciated).
Today was supposed to be "lock myself in a room and do massive amounts of work day" but it ended up being a "do absolutely nothing day". I did manage to not leave the flat once, however :-( Today was literally wasted. Oh well. Though, there was a little tribronal skype session. AND Brightcove (my first co-op,
http://www.brightcove.com/en/) decided to be nice enough to give me my job back over the summer! :-D Considering how much I love this company, my bosses, and the team I work with, this left me pretty elated. I briefly considered trying my hand at a financial company, but ultimately figured this would make for a much more enjoyable summer. (Typical tribronal picture posted for nostalgia's sake)
Now, I have to try and deal with the massive amounts of work I have due next week. Waaaaaah. Also, I'm considering getting my first haircut since last August tomorrow. 75% chance I get it, 10% chance I'll shave my head. We'll see.
