It's 6 a.m. I'm walking the dog. L. usually walks Sprout at this hour, but she's working on school stuff and I volunteered. It's dark out. Sprout stops to pee and as I look back, I notice that the blinking yellow light on Garfield Street is illuminating him like a slow strobe light. I also notice the silhouette of a man walking on the sidewalk toward us, a block or two away. We continue walking, but he gains on us. Before he reaches us, he crosses onto the street. As he passes, I see he is staring at the LCD display of a cell phone. He is carrying a cooler that is a little larger than a lunch box and wearing a back pack. He is a young man.
I am very curious. What is he doing? Is he making a phone call, or perhaps checking a text message? Is he playing a video game? Where is he going at this hour?
Sprout has already done his business, so I cross the street and begin to walk the other way. But I turn to see the man sitting on a railroad tie in front of a house, about a block up the street. Hmm...
my life,
