Shakago

Last night was the Valley Advocate's Grand Band Slam. I was posted at the Shakago Martini and Piano Bar on Hamden Street in downtown Springfield, along with Hef and Danny Opps. I had a vodka martini with Stoli -- it was surprisingly nice. Oddly enough, I recognized the vodka taste from when I used to drink White Russians more often. It's the vodka-heavy dregs at the bottom, once you've gotten through most of the Kahlua and cream. That's the good part.

Hef played with his band, Gadjo Swing. Gadjo is the word that gypsies use to describe non-gypsies. The three guitarists in the band all play a pretty mean gypsy guitar. The crowd seemed to get more excited about Janet Ryan, the blues/piano singer beforehand, but you could see the guitarists in the crowd come up to take a look at Gadjo Swing, raising their eyebrows and twitching their fingers.
