World Cup!

Tomorrow, the 2010 World Cup begins. For a soccer fan without television, it presents a slight problem. Univision claims that you can watch all 64 games live streamed on their website for free.

Before the last World Cup in 2006, L. and I took the train down to Hartford to watch the U.S. National Team play Latvia at Rentschler Field. I watched the U.S. team's first game at a biker bar in Easthampton. I quoted pkhentz in an article I wrote about the cup in The Valley Advocate. We watched the final of that year's cup at the Northampton Brewery with our friends R. and E., who had just returned from South Africa and a stint in the Peace Corps.

I think we watched the U.S. play Germany in the 2002 World Cup in a basement in Williston, Vermont, at L.'s cousin's house. If I remember right, the broadcast was early, early in the morning. The next day, we drove up to Montreal and I remember walking through an Asian neighborhood and seeing vans drive by with Korean fans hanging out, celebrating South Korea's improbable victory over Spain in the quarterfinals.

I don't have clear memories of 1998. I remember watching a game at Rafter's in Amherst, but the tournament that year was pretty disappointing for the U.S. side.

In 1994, I watched one or two games live at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. I remember seeing Ireland v. Mexico, but I thought I might have seen another one, too.

The first World Cup I remember watching was the 1986 Cup in Mexico. I remember watching Diego Maradona and the striped-shirted Argentines win the cup.
