Otello

Mar 14, 2010 22:08

For Valentine's Day, my mother-in-law gave me a DVD of the Metropolitan Opera's production of Verdi's Otello, based upon the Shakespeare play, Othello. I teach Othello to my students --we'll be studying the play next week, after the college resumes from Spring Break. So I've been watching the opera. I finished Act II tonight. I'm impressed with James Morris's Iago. But I fing that the libretto seems to tidy Iago up a bit as a villain from the play. But the emotional sweep -- the low registers and the darkness of the play -- lends itself well to the music.
