"Bo, Wawa" (CM #2)

Before heading up to Canada, we had bought little A. a Personal Floatation Device. We were looking for something that was a little more swimming-oriented, but didn't find anything her size. But we brought the PFD up with us, excited about the prospect of taking her out on the water.

We dragged the canoe out from under the cottage and put it in at the creek. We had a lot of rain this year, so the creek was running high. The lake wasn't in too far, but it wasn't all the way out like it was two years ago, when we were there last. The beach was reedy, but the water came in almost as far as when we were kids and we'd walk the reedy path down to the rocks.

We weren't sure how A. would do in the canoe. So L. held her, facing back toward me, while I paddled solo. The morning we went out, the lake had been glassy, but by the time we got the boat in, there was a little wind. I paddled out the creek, following it's meandering turns through the reeds and headed out around Sunset Island.

When L. and I were in Red Bay last, L. was pregnant with A. We had gone to Sunset to look for driftwood with Aunt M. I think that experience fed the dream I had the night before A. was born, which led to us choosing her name. We had "Island" in mind. So we paddled around the island, pointing to it's rocky back side and telling A. that's where she got her name. Two years ago, I think we walked out to the island, because the lake was so low. But this year, we could paddle the canoe all the way.

A. was very excited about the boat. At some point, she said, "Bo, wawa," stringing together her words for "boat" and "water," her first two-word combination. I took a Flip video on the way back, when I wasn't fighting the waves with the one paddle.
