Western Mass Sports Journal

The two stories I wrote for the Western Mass Sports Journal came out this week in the February issue. I got hooked up with writing for WMSJ because my old Recorder buddy, Kyle Belanger, is the editor there, so he recruited me to write a couple of stories. Unfortunately, you can't see the stories on the web, but I'll give you a teaser.'I'm Only 21': Falcons Rookie Stays in the Moment

At a recent practice in the Mass Mutual Center, Springfield Falcons media assistant Damon Markiewicz brought me rinkside and pointed out the player I came to interview.

"There he is, in the green jersey," he said, pointing over to where a number of players were clustered, waiting for instructions from head coach Steve Stirling.

Falcons rookie Maxime Boisclair is not hard to pick out on the ice. He's the only one who looks, well, Haitian.
And, story number two:Spider Woman

It was the final stretch of the first game of her college career and the Fairfield player she was guarding just nailed a 3-pointer, but Kara Powell didn't give up.

Powell, the starting point guard of the Richmond Spiders, dug down and showed why Richmond coach Michael Shafer expects big things out of the freshman from Agawam High School.

With Richmond ahead, Fairfield went into a full-court press, something Powell said Richmond didn't cover much in practice. With the game on Fairfield's Connecticut home court, perhaps the home crowd thought the Stags' rally had begun. But the stepped-up pressure didn't rally Powell and she brought the ball down the court.

"It was tough," Powell recalled. "But I was able to get out of it."
Those of you around the Pioneer Valley can find WMSJ around town.
