Boar's Head is This Weekend

The Boar's Head Festival at Trinity United Methodist Church in Springfield is this weekend. This will be the fourth year I'll play the part of the woodsman, but the first year as an official member of Trinity. I joined the church largely because of my role in Boar's Head. I remember fondly the first time I went to Boar's Head, invited by L., who I was then just getting to know. I got lost finding the ticket office downstairs and then met L.'s father (now my father-in-law) for the first time in his role as the beggar, limping down the aisle in a sack cloth hood with blacked-out teeth.

Now, as the pre-show story goes, I am Alexander Trenchuant, woodsman, and the sharpest shot in the forest. I'm secretly married to the flutist, played by L., who is the beggar's daughter. She has no money for a dowry and our relationship cannot be discovered, or she will lose her musical pension. So I am pursued by one of the Goose girls. Such is the level of detail of the festival that I, in a cast of 80, have a back story.

There is a lovely page of pictures by Jim Sherrard on the Trinity website.
