J Mascis, Lou Barlow, Thurston Moore

Back when I was in college, I used to lament about the bands who would never come to Central Florida, where I lived. I saw some good shows in my time. I saw the Breeders open for Nirvana only months before Kurt Cobain would kill himself. I saw Drivin' 'n' Cryin' several times -- the first time in the old Beachem Theater, my model for what a rock club was supposed to be like, with beer bottles rolling on the floor and everything. I saw Concrete Blonde at the Visage and I saw Blues Traveller play a half-empty gymnasium at Stetson College.

But I always lamented that bands like Throwing Muses and the Pixies would never make it down my way. Of course, the Pixies broke up halfway through my college career -- but I did see the Breeders in Florida.

Since coming up to the Pioneer Valley in Massachusetts, I've been able to see Throwing Muses, Juliana Hatfield and Frank Black. So I've healed some of that old ache. And to be honest, I just don't go see shows that often any more. Unfortunately, my taste in music has become somewhat of an exercise in nostalgia.

But coming up this week, J Mascis, Sebadoh and Sonic Youth are all getting together to play a show in Northampton, a benefit for autism. Lou Barlow's mom is organizing it. All the bands have local ties. In fact, Thurston Moore was just on the radio this morning, talking about picking up his daughter from school and wishing his wife Kim Gordon a happy birthday. Well, and promoting the show, of course.

How cool is that? Maybe I can break through my apathy and score myself some tickets.
