No Thornton, no Samsonov, no Axelsson, but still the Bruins found a way to sneak by the red-hot Ottawa Senators last night.
Grinny and I drove out to see the game -- an hour and a half on the MassPike. It wasn't a pretty game, but the shootout was exciting. The Bruins' rookie goalie Tim Thompson (just up from the minors) stopped all three Ottawa shooters, making Patrice Bergeron's score count for Boston, lifting the Bruins to a shootout win after regular time ended at a 2-2 deadlock. It really seems like the
Bruins are retooling for the future. They dealt Joe Thornton early in the season, and then unloaded Sergei Samsonov this month. P.J. Axelsson is on IR. All that leaves the Bruins with little marquee talent on the ice. But the Senators didn't start Dominic Hasek, so even while they squandered several good chances, the Bruins were able to tag backup goalie Ray Emers with two goals to take the early lead. The Senators evened it up in the third with quality goals by Jason Spezza and Antoine Vermette. But Thompson stood tall in the shootout for the Bruins' win.
It was green hat day at the TD Banknorth Garden, but we apparently missed our hats at the turnstiles. We even made it there in time to get a beer before the first puck dropped (Labatt's Blue) but that wasn't soon enough for the green hats though. We did see the Boston Gaelic Fire Brigade pipe band play at the intermission, "Scotland the Brave." There you go. Happy St. Pat's.
