Jun 25, 2012 02:23

Title: Drift and Melt
Fandom: Legend of Korra
Character(s): Asami-centric, teensy Asami/Iroh
Spoilers: Through "Endgame"
Rating: Kid friendly

SUMMARY: Asami picks up the pieces

*~*~*

At first she's just numb. Surrounded by reaches of ice, she could blend right in. The benders have their missing parts restored, but there is no restoring things that were never real to begin with- a fantasy of family, a fledgling love. A future.

She puts a hand to the ice, wondering if it will even melt.

Ikki finally calls her in from the cold. Asami wipes away her chilly tears and turns toward the sound. She'll go through the motions. Something will stick eventually.

Something out there is not an illusion.

*~*~*

There is at least one Future that still needs her attention. With her father imprisoned and the city in ruin, a blissful mountain of urgent tedium is hers for the taking, mostly in the form of board meetings and paperwork.

It will take almost a decade to sell enough satomobiles to cover the secret costs of mecha tanks and airplanes, not to mention the business fines slapped on them by a new, predictably bureaucratic new City Council.

Asami laments the loss of her father's vision. She has a quick mind, but it's better suited to the here and the now, application more than invention. He could see the future. She's afraid she might run the company to the ground.

*~*~*

She teaches Korra to drive. By some unspoken agreement, they don't talk about Mako.

*~*~*

After a year, she visits her father. She tells him about Amon, though he had likely long since heard the news of the Equalist leader's hypocrisy. Hiroshi eyes her tiredly, vacantly, but doesn't speak.

After that, it gets a little bit easier to see him.

*~*~*

Bolin gives her the idea to save the company.

"I got the idea from Korra-you know, because she couldn't drive? And you had to drive us everywhere? I couldn't either, by the way. But I never told you. It would be the coolest thing ever if you could do the same thing with a plane!"

He wasn't the only one interested in airplanes. The United Forces had already approached her about her father's designs for fighters.

Asami looks to the sky and finally catches a vision.

*~*~*

She visits Hiroshi. She talks, he pretends not to listen. She's forbidden from showing him any military designs but she does bring fanciful sketches of what some of the engineers are working on for their civilian planes.

He never speaks, but the next week there are drawings by her chair that solve half the problematic math all by themselves.

*~*~*

She sees the world. From the ice canals of the Northern Water Tribe to the Fire Lord's palace, everyone is eager to have a piece of the sky, and contracts abound. She meets the Fire Lord, but acknowledges that she's already met the Fire Lord's son.

What neither Asami nor Iroh expected was a warm dance on a cool night, the remembrance of that one time, that one place, drawing them together. They talk all night.

When she leaves he gives her a gift-a box of Jasmine Dragon tea, which seems to be a big deal-- and he promises to call.

*~*~*

The day after Future Industries rolls its first passenger plane- the Bolin 1- off the assembly line, Hiroshi Sato dies in prison.

The funeral is attended largely by curious onlookers, but the Avatar and her friends are there to support the only surviving family.

Asami doesn't feel numb anymore.

*~*~*

A/N: Is there a canon/fanon way to spell "mecha tank?" For now I'm going with 'mecha' as Laura spells it in her "Rising" book. ;-)

Also, whew! Glad I got that off my chest.
