I don't think I can help you much with the life management apps, as I don't really use them either.

On writing, I know there are other writing apps out there, though I haven't looked into any of them much. Currently, there is no MS Word/Office for iPad, but rumor has it Microsoft is considering it for the future; no telling when or if it's ever going to happen. I've been using Pages, which certainly works better if you're fully integrated into the Mac ecosystem, but even so... yeah, it's kinda awkward. *shrugs*

On reading, iBooks officially does not handle .doc files at all; you pretty much have to use some kind of word processing app that has MS Word compatibility. So I'm afraid you're stuck with Pages or finding another reader app that can handle .docs. Can you get your friends to send you the manuscripts as PDFs? iBooks will take those with no problem, though some features may be more limited (no resizing fonts, etc.). As to moving ebooks between devices, anything you buy from Apple's iBookstore is linked with the Apple ID you used to purchase it and you'll be able to sync it via iTunes (or over the air, if you've got iOS 5) to any iDevice (iPad, iPod touch, iPhone) you have now or will have in the future that's linked to the same Apple ID. ebooks you purchase from other vendors, like via Amazon Kindle, you should be able to move between devices as well, but you'll need to check with Amazon on how to do it.

What else do I use my iPad for? Email, web surfing and TV/movie watching when I'm traveling. That's what I got it for in the first place, so I'm pretty pleased with it. *hugs iPad* :)
