Summer is here!

What a beautiful weekend.

Friday night I had a graduation party to attend. Then I came home and finished reading The False Princess by Eilis O'Neal. I had taken a break from my Epic Quest fantasy book because I wanted something with a more immediate, satisfying payoff and I was really impatient to read this based on emmaorgana's heartfelt recommendation.

Strong, well-defined central heroine (and supporting female heroines) , healthy portrayal of romance, great writing. I also kind of want to write fanfic about a late but crucial character, and when you want to write fanfic after a book, that's usually a good sign. This is right up there with Ella Enchanted for fantastic YA fairy tales you would read over and over and over.

Also, Laura, if you haven't put this one in your queue, you'd better. It would push a lot of your good buttons simultaneously. ;-)

Saturday was the surprise birthday party we threw for my mom's 50th and it went of delightfully. She was totally surprised. The food was awesome, the family & friends was even better. My favorite part of the evening was when my cousins, niece, and nephew and I were out jumping on the trampoline doing sing-along songs. Watching Noelle try to chime in was the most adorable thing in the world. She is going to be quite the performer. I both can't wait for her to get better at it, and want to hold onto her baby gibber lyrics for as long as possible.

Yesterday evening my sister and I went to a wedding for a friend from high school. It was really fun seeing a lot of old friends. Poor Joy, though. She ended up at a table almost completely full of Dr. Who fans/sci fi geeks.

The most memorable part of the evening was when the DJ (another mutual friend from our high school days) played a video of a bunch of us doing the "Spanish Panic" from the production we did of Once Upon a Mattress when I was a senior (and the bride was a sophomore). And then we did our best to reenact it on the dance floor. I haven't laughed so fully and well in a long time.

Today I didn't have any plans except to work on reading through Shakespeare's Basement, but mom's plans crowded out my plans. I didn't mind, though. The pool is now open, cleaned up, and warmed up (a little too much for my tastes, but we go through this argument every year). At any rate, the same gang of folks who got together for my mom's surprise party came over for all day swimming, hot dogs, leftovers, and sunburn. I have pink shoulders. I got some of my book read and made some progress with my Rapunzel embroidery.

It was the best day ever. Well, the best kind of day ever. :-)
