Seriously, guys. Tonight's episode of Community was a treasure trove of brilliant hilarity (including their most hilarious riff on Glee ever), but they tipped their hat to their fans in the most unprecedented way I have ever seen.
So the basic premise of the episode is, the gang finds a bunch of stuff that Troy's pet monkey from S1 (Chicken Finger episode) has been stealing and hiding in the air ducts the entire year. The pile of stuff ends up bringing back a bunch of memories, none of which are actual episodes, so this is not a recap episode.
Through the course of arguing over the memories, Annie asks Jeff to clear the air about what has been going on with them all year. He seems confused and she's like, "All the tender moments, the longing gazes, the will they/won't they vibe?"
The episode cuts to a video montage (again, of clips we've never seen) of really dumb, inconsequential moments between the two of them, set in slow-mo and manipulated (presumably by Annie's imagination) to make it seem like there was this delicate, burgeoning, deep love growing between them.
More than halfway through the montage, I started to feel like the whole thing felt strangely familiar.
And then I remembered.
It was a fanvid.
They made an homage to someone's fanvid using the same song and the same editing style.
I remember because I really liked that vid. It made it seem like there was something far more substantial in Jeff and Annie's S1 relationship than there really was, and I like it when vidders can sell something through editing. I thought it was the very best Jeff/Annie fanvid that I found in all my trolling.
I cannot even begin to imagine what that vidder is feeling right now. I hope not offended because I think it is the most NERDY AWESOMETASTIC THING EVER.
Dan Harmon gets shippers. He gets vidders. He gets fans, and he lets them know he's keeping his pulse on our reactions.
Community... you just... yeah. You're the best.
