Christmas Advent Playlist: Day 7

Dec 07, 2010 06:48

This is one of the Spanish language Christmas songs that I learned in Chile. In this case, it's the actual recording that I learned (the artist's name is Cecilia Echeñique- she did at least two Christmas albums for and with children and they're both wonderful). I was so surprised to be able to find it on YT this year. Two years ago when I fell in love with it, it was absolutely nowhere to be found. Even this time it took a bit more flexing of my "search" muscles than usual.

"María, María, ¡ven aca corriendo! Que el chocolatillo se lo están comiendo.

As best as I can figure, this is about a little donkey (little donkeys figure quite a lot into these songs) taking a load of chocolate to the village and eating it along the way. The chorus is all the children appealing to Mary to avert this terrible crisis.

This was my favorite song from my two Spanish Christmas CDs for the peppiness alone, but the context his hilariously fitting too, because even though my mamá warned me not to, I once made the mistake of leaving a large chunk of chocolate on a low shelf in my bedroom. When I got home, our dog, Dany, had made quick work of it. All that was left was a balled-up wrapper in the middle of the floor underneath my bed. To this day I have no idea how he managed to open (and crumple) it so tidily.

So yes. The song has personal relevance. ;-)

If anyone wants a copy of this song, send me a PM. I'm not sure that it's available for purchase online anywhere.
