So. Tangled.
I have this really weird feeling right now. It's mostly just deflation. Not because the movie was bad (it was a really charming movie) but because I've been waiting for so long with such anticipation that I now have to sort of readjust internally. I felt the exact same way after I saw Fellowship of the Ring for the first time.
The story was great. I love the songs! Loved the ship, loved the 'ship participants as individual characters. Laughed a lot at Maximus. Adored Pascal. The animation was gorgeous.
Really, there is nothing to complain about. Except my own damn over-anticipation. LOL Everything pretty much happened as I expected. That would be because I spoiled myself in as many ways as Disney would let me, including shrewdly piecing together obvious plot points from the soundtrack. So while I had a good time, I wasn't on the edge of my seat dying to know what was going to happen. Only one moment in the climax really took me by surprise.
Bad Faith!
I could slap my own wrist, but really, there isn't much point. I learned this lesson about being over-spoiled a very long time ago. I just don't think that in this particular case (*points to icon*) that anything could have been done to hold me back.
So, I will wait a couple of days, go and see it again when I'm calmer, and then I'll probably love it almost as much as How to Train Your Dragon. Yes, I said almost. I still think when the dust settles that "Dragon" will be my favorite of the two. Just barely. Shocking, I know. ;-)
Anyway! I made a spoiler cut, didn't I? Alrighty.
Rapunzel. Tentatively my second-favorite Disney girl after Belle. I love her courage and her vulnerability. And her talent and versatility! And her hair skillz! She was sweet without being cloying, bright and resourceful and funny. Her speech to Mother Gothel at the end about fighting till the day she dies was a moment of sheer awesome.
Flynn. Who is really named Eugene. Which... every time she called him that, it just got funnier and funnier. Anyway, Flynn's veneer of superficiality ended up being much thinner than I supposed. But then, they almost drowned in their first three hours together, so I suppose she cracked him open sooner than she might otherwise have done. I have to admit, for all their promotion of the two of them being the "heart of the movie", Flynn didn't get quite as much oomph in the character development dept., but since as he himself says in the opening narration, the story is really about Rapunzel, I'm okay with that. He still does lots and lots of talking and we all know how happy I am about that.
Mother Gothel. Faceted villain with simple motivation. I say faceted because she's so smart, and so dedicated, taking all the trouble to maintain a pretense of affection for Rapunzel for so long just to keep her docile and happy. She certainly doesn't cut corners in achieving her goals. So bravo on the villain front.
Maximus. Just... *laughs* He was a riot. I think the scene where he first meets Rapunzel is my favorite.
Pascal. I want one. I especially loves when he was hugging Rapunzel's foot comfortingly. Like fifty people in the theater went "Awwww"
And... I'll cut it short here. I could summarize the story and everything, but I'll leave some surprises.
In short, a solid addition to the family of classics!
