Telescopes and Cosmology
I watched a very interesting show on TV tonight. It was about John Dobson, an astronomer and cosmologist. He has some very interesting ideas about the universe which I won't mangle here.
There seems to be some sort of "cult of personality" grown up around Dobson and his "Sidewalk Astronomers" group. I find it a little odd but that might just be the way things are done in America. Maybe some Americans could comment on that aspect. They have a home on the web at http://sidewalkastronomers.us/
One fascinating part of this is the telescopes he builds and teaches people to build. They are much simpler and easier to construct than the usual thing you buy. Some information on these can be had at http://sfsidewalkastronomers.org/telescopes/building/
Maybe I'll look into this for a summer project. Hmm.
