High-tech time-wasting

So, I managed to acquire a Nintendo DS Lite this weekend. My dad actually found a pink one at Target, but had a hard time buying it. According to him the exchange went something like this:

Dad: Do you have the Nintendo DS Lite?
Dude: Yep. Only in pink, though, sorry.
Dad: I want to buy it.
Dude: . . .But it's pink.
Dad: I still want to buy it.
Dude: You realize it's pink, right?
Dad: Just sell it to me.

My brother later suggested that he tell the clerk, "hey, it's the 21st century." Hee.

I was filled with squee when he came home and presented me with the pink DS. The next day I ran out and bought Animal Crossing: Wild World and Hotel Dusk: Room 215.

My original reason for wanting a DS was Brain Age and Cooking Mama, but those fell by the wayside when I realized how awesome Hotel Dusk is. It's basically a choose-your-own adventure type scenario, with an alcoholic, frowny-faced detective and a motley cast of (well-rounded) characters. You work your way through ten chapters of story (talking to people, solving puzzles, and just generally being a badass) as Kyle Hyde, using the touch screen.

There are little mysteries throughout the game that appear to be linked to the overall mystery: what happened to Kyle's partner Bradley (who double-crossed him) after he disappeared three years ago? There's also a supernatural element, but I haven't gotten far enough into the game for it to become a major story element yet. I have to say that I have a virtual crush on Kyle Hyde,. If Spike Spiegel were a surly detective, he'd be Kyle.

Overall, the game is a surprising amount of fun. It involves a lot of reading (and you even hold the DS like a book) and can be slow-going at times, but the overall story is as intriguing as a good potboiler detective story, so you really don't mind the occasional lag. I don't know how replayable it is though, but the chapters take a fair amount of time to solve, so you should get your money's worth by the time you finish the game.

But my one major question is: wither fandom for this game? Wither???

nintendo, animal crossing, nintendo ds, technology, hotel dusk
