Look, I don't know what this post is. It's DEFINITELY not me getting into a new fandom, because I've done the bandom ride and I'm OK with moving on to other pastures.
What this post also is a NOT is me trying to pretend I'm discovering a whole new thing here, when there were already 50 fics in Italian on AO3 for this band before they won Eurovision. Like, there's an influx of English speakers into this tiny fandom, but I'm not trying to take anything away from Italians or act like any of this is Brand New Information. Italians, if you're reading this, this is your house and I'm just trying to be respectful while I'm here.
Another thing this post is not is: a primer, of any kind, about this band. I've written those before, do not have the time or the energy.
What this post IS is me being sick at home for the past week, with a fever (not covid tho, no worries!) and finding comfort in Moneskin and Moneskin only, and vomiting a bunch of the stuff I've found at you, in case you'd like to enjoy it as well.
OK, so just so we're all on the same page, let's start with the famous performance after they won Eurovision where 3 out of the 3 dudes in the band kissed each other on stage:

Good, now we have a baseline for where we're at in ~present time~.
Now let's time travel down the youtube hole.
So, as far as I can tell, you're welcome to correct me on this, Moneskin was started by Victoria, the bass player, when she was about 15 and going to school in a middle class neighborhood in Rome. She wanted to put a band together, and so she started recruiting people from her school who would be down to jam and practice together.
That's how she got Thomas, the guitarist, who's almost a year younger than her, and Ethan, the drummer, who is between Victoria and Thomas' age. (None of this would matter if they were adults, but since in high school what grade you're in MATTERS I find this endlessly fascinating.)
They originally settled on a female vocalist, so they could play covers of various songs, but then Damiano, who's a year older than Victoria (and two years older than Thomas) and was a ~16 year old singer looking for a band he could join, called Victoria and asked whether they were still looking for a vocalist. They auditioned him (whether this was actually meeting or just like, letting him sing over the phone or whatever is unknown) and decided he was much better than the singer they already had, so Damiano replaced her.

This is one of their earliest recorded performances, AFAIK, from 2016, roughly a year after the band was formed. Look at those ABSOLUTE BABIES. It's so amaaaazing to see it compared to the Eurovision thing, like Thomas (the youngest) would have been ~15, and Damiano (the oldest) would have been ~17.
Musically, you can see Damiano doing the thing he was doing for a good long while, where the strength of his voice is basically its growly, powerful quality. That was his vocal trademark since, I'm guessing, forever, and it really only changed closer to Eurovision. Also I love that Ethan is playing that box drum thing, something he continues to play on their album and in various songs still.
Anyway, during this time they were basically a teenage cover band. They also ~famously performed on the street in touristy areas of Rome, here's a random recording of
one such performance.
Anyway, blah blah they continued to practice and perform and record themselves, they entered and won a local contest, they went to Denmark (Victoria is half-Danish) and performed there a bit, it was all relatively amateurish, but it gave them confidence and experience.

Here's a performance from 2017, a year later and you can obviously see they're much more polished and together, and Damiano is honing in on that growly thing his voice does EVEN BETTER for this cover. Meanwhile Ethan and Thomas are still literal babies lolol
Also, since everyone including Damiano is still technically high school aged in this video, it cracks me up that Damiano LIT UP A CIGARETTE CLEARLY FOR THIS VIDEO.
IDK why but it made me think of my own time in high school band, and how smoking was Not Allowed by our musical director, but in reality some of the older singers smoked and they told us it can improve your voice before you go on (and it's good for nerves) and I remember the dilemma of whether to have a smoke before a performance in a way where our musical director wouldn't see (we'd usually pass a cig around) and also it was known that since our musical director was a musician and composer but not a singer, he kind of looked the other way and didn't interfere TOO much with what the singers were doing. Like, the older kids could always pull out YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT WORKS FOR A VOCALIST and whine at him, so he was just like "whatever you're doing, your voice better sound fucking spot on, that's all I require."
Anyway, it just made me wonder about Damiano's own singing/music teachers in high school, because I refuse to believe that someone as ambitious and passionate as him wasn't taking lessons either in school or privately, and how I'm SURE none of his teachers approved of the smoking, and he is somewhere between 17 and 18 here and it just really makes me giggle that he's being a rebellious bad boy here by going against his teachers' advice ON CAMERA. (He doesn't actually smoke the cig during the performance, but he LIGHTS it and TAKES ONE DRAG so ha! In your face, singing tutors!)
Anyway, a few months after this was recorded came the band's big break: X Factor! It was a national stage, they were the youngest contestants, they got a mentor in the form of an Italian rock legend, who according to what I've seen is considered to be someone who really shaped them and improved them and helped them find a distinct focus and style as a band.
You will also note a SHARP change in well, the style of everything with this band, before and after the show.
Basically, every single one of their X Factor performances is amazing, IMO, they're ALL GREAT both as covers of the songs they're doing and as just totally out there, bold reality TV content. Honestly, I can't imagine how the other contestants felt when THESE were the youngest kids in the cast.
They eventually won second place in the competition, but it really launched their careers and led to them writing and releasing original music, making proper music videos, and you know, eventually Eurovision.

I really like this clip from the show, which is mostly behind-the-scenes work with their mentor (and Skin! She was their guest mentor I think) and rehearsals because you can see everyone's "natural" style at that point. Damiano has a mustache and goatee! LOLOL Ethan is working on his detached broad-shouldered look but hasn't started going to the gym yet, Thomas is doing his broody pretty boy thing except he still looks about 15 lol even Victoria, without visible makeup, just looks SO YOUNG, like a 16 year old girl you know?
Anyway, I promised some X Factor performances, and I'll give you some, even though again you should look then up on youtube, they're all great.

Here's their cover of "Somebody Told Me" which is a PERFECT song for Damiano's voice at this stage. After this performance (and others like it) the one comment judges argued over is whether Damiano needs to have more vocal variation, because he kind of sounds the same throughout the song, and the band's mentor argued that Damiano's voice is a recognizable brand and they should just stick with it. But, as you can see if you compare this to their later stuff, Damiano did end up working in a LOT more vocal variation when they started writing their own stuff.

And here's them performing "Kiss This", a song that isn't even THAT dramatic and yet Damiano performs it in high heels, DANCING ON A POLE and RIPPING OFF HIS OWN SEE-THROUGH SHIRT mid-performance. Like, remember he's singing LIVE here, he's pole dancing in heels and SINGING LIVE and that's what he sounds like.
Also I would just like to point out, Damiano is EIGHTEEN in this, according to my math. EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD.
He was probably done with high school at that point (though Thomas at the very least should still be going to school lol) but he's basically the age of a 12th grader/senior/whatever they're called where you're from.
Just... imagine being in grade 12 and having DAMIANO DAVID, who is already doing shit like this, as a classmate. I CAN'T LOLOL how does one even survive high school under those circumstances?????
Also, sometime during this period, either slightly before or slightly after X Factor, Damiano got together with his girlfriend to this day, an Italian model (who's 3 years older than him).
(In general since the band was asked about their sexualities like a billion times, the status currently is that Damiano is straight but likes to say he's "curious", which I personally understand as "like to make out with bandmates on stage" lol, Thomas is also straight, Victoria is bi and Ethan is "free spirited" and has essentially refused to put a label on it.)
Anyway, after X Factor they started releasing original singles, making music videos for them, and touring. Those videos are mostly what you get on youtube when you search for them, I think, and most of them are also on the band's official channel, so again I'm not gonna link everything.
Like, here's one of their club performances from 2018:

You can see the vibe of the band has changed A LOT from those 2016-2017 videos pre X Factor. Now everyone's in very different getups, their stage presence is different, Victoria (who is 18 at this point) is in a leather shorts and fishnets, Damiano is wearing his new favorite glittery chest harness lol, Thomas still looks like a baby.
I particularly love Victoria jamming with Ethan in this clip, and also it's interesting to see Damiano NOT do here a thing that was sort of iconic for them in Eurovision, and that's the singer interacting with the musicians. Here the rest of them interact but Damiano is too busy just Being Fully On Stage and giving the audience his full half-naked, glittery, dropping to his knees attention.
Also a thing I find hilarious is that, coming out of bandom, it's glaring to me that this would never be a thing that worked in the US, because forget them being under the drinking age of 21, there are ways around that for performers, two of them are UNDER EIGHTEEN in this and I don't think would be allowed to play at ANY nightclub with a liquor license, especially if they were reality TV stars and not just some act that got booked and no one's looking too closely.
But of course, we're in a country where, like in my country, and in most countries, such restrictions don't apply, alcohol is not that heavily regulated, and they can have this kind of career while being minors. I'm just so used to being in fandoms based in the US, it was really funny to realize that actually, this works exactly like it does here and in most places.
And here's one of their music videos:

LOL I love that in this one Damiano manages to show up in both a corset and a suit in different times (the corset fits him MUCH better, the suit is way too big and frumpy).
They start working on an album, which eventually comes out and does well, they tour to support it (the title of the album is tattooed across Damiano's chest btw, it's the sentence that runs from one of his shoulders to the other).
Eventually a tragic thing happens: Damiano cuts his hair lolol I really loved his hair during this period. He also steadily gets more and more tattoos, which is not tragic! Just a fact.
In 2020 they come out with a new single called "20 years" and a whole blitz campaign of PR, including something that I think the (English) internet is still grappling with.
So, they decide to do a cover for an Italian magazine where they're all going to be naked, done by a famous photographer. When these photos first started making the rounds on twitter I saw a lot of people be kind of wary of them, some of them were outtakes and didn't look super polished, but besides, who in their right mind releases essentially their own nudes in this day and age? Especially Victoria, who's front and center in that photoshoot, people were concerned it might be something that leaked against the band's wishes.
But nope! They legit not only did this photoshoot intending for it to come out, they did a benind-the-scenes video and there's the magazine cover on which Victoria specifically is just right up there with her boobs out! And this was only a year ago, so it's not like some old content from when they barely had an audience.
So, the photos are NSFW, I'm gonna link to the two that are making the rounds on twitter:
high quality finished photo,
darker photo that's an outtake.
I actually think both of those are more interesting photos than the one the magazine ended up using.
The behind-the-scenes video probably got booted from youtube for nudity, but here's a tweet that
links to it on facebook. So yes, that's a thing that exists.
I've seen approximately one billion jokes about these pictures in Russian and all of them delight me. "When you go to the sauna with friends and towels are extra", "When work asks me to think up a teambuilding exercise", "there's a naked girl right there but I can't take my eyes off the guys, this is the death of heterosexuality", "excuse me I need to visit Italy urgently for RELIGIOUS REASONS", etc.
Anyway, in 2021 they enter and win Sanremo, which is Italy's festival/competition to choose the Eurovision act, simultaneously they work on more original songs, release more singles, and a second album, do shows. If you haven't seen their Sanremo win here it is, it's mostly fun for their outfits IMO:
This is a weird video that's actually a compilation of two different outfits they wore on different nights, I think it's fun to see both. Also, this version has an orchestra! Which is really cool.
Anyway, and then we get to the Eurovision thing, which they also won. I definitely get why Damiano was like "uh I think the one thing we're clear on now is that we're definitely done with competitions! They're too much stress!" Like they've done a LOT of them considering the age of the band lolol
Anyway, it's very cute to see this band go from a bunch of teenagers playing covers for tourists on the street to winning Eurovision with an original rock song. I mean most Eurvision acts aren't huge established stars, but it's still neat.
Also I watched the entire mostly boring 30minute press conference they had to do right after winning, where Thomas and Ethan are basically on a different plane of existence lolol and Victoria answers most of the questions they get (some of which are very dumb) and Damiano is basically in his underwear pouring champagne over everyone, and then a reporter tells them people on twitter are saying Damiano did a line of coke on camera, and asks Damiano whether it's true and honestly I was laughing at that when I first saw it, but seeing Damiano's reaction later is just... so heartbreaking!
He gets so serious suddenly, and is just like "please don't say that, please" and you can kind of see that aside from being hilarious, it's also a thing where the band pushes so many boundaries, and Damiano especially is so Out There All The Time with his looks and his clothes and his behavior that throwing "oh you must do drugs" at him just really bums him and all of them out. (Also the fact that they had to issue a statement the next day to try and kill this thing and it STILL wouldn't die and DAMIANO WENT AND DID A DRUG TEST VOLUNTARILY just to PROVE to everyone, even though once you know what's happening it's VERY CLEAR in the recording that he was obviously not doing a line, ugh, my heart. The best night of his life shouldn't be marred by having to do blood tests because of a twitter meme! Sigh)
I want to say that while I'm currently very enamored with them, I'm trying not to be because I've been in multiple RPF fandoms and invariably it leads to heartbreak. Fiction canons end when a canon ends, RPF fandoms end when the band breaks up, or someone's outed as a massive asshole, or when they change their style so much it doesn't speak to the core audience anymore, and like all of those are perfectly normal, human things and are also heartbreaking! LOL
So you know, I'm just here enjoying the fictional universe of these fictional personas, trying to not to get In Too Deep. (A post this length isn't too deep right? Right?)
Anyway, let's end on a high note:
