I am one of those people that are actually looking forward to the iPad, despite it's awful name. I think the main reason is that I enjoy the experience of e-books, but am tired of reading books on my iPhone. I love being able to have the whim to start a new book and within minutes I have it in hand. I also don't have to worry about where to store the book once I am done reading it. However, I dislike holding a small device while reading and I dislike having to flip the page after every paragraph or two. A larger screen will solve my only dislikes about e-books.
Although, part of my love for e-books lies in the fact that I always have it with me without having to carry anything extra. I am assuming that an iPhone version of Apple's e-reader will also be coming along. If it is anything like the B&N app (and it probably will be) where you purchase the book from their website and then it is automatically be added to the iPhone's library and also lets you download it on the computer, or wherever else you want it. Hopefully purchasing a book in iBookStore will also make it available on my iPhone... still letting me have the book with me everywhere I go. Of course, I can always just continue to use the B&N e-reader app if it doesn't do this... the iPad e-reader is just so much prettier and I doubt the iPhone B&N app will be scaled to the larger screen very well unless they update the app.
So why not just buy an e-reader? Well, I haven't seen any that make me want to spend $300 or more. When I first saw the Nook I thought it might finally be one that was worthwhile, but after playing with it I am completely unimpressed. It is pretty much exactly the same as all the others, with the addition of a small touch screen at bottom. But the iPad has a full color touch screen that does so much more than just books.
Lately I haven't been giving my Mac Book Pro the love it deserves. I can't use it at work anymore, and for most tasks I much prefer my iMac's 27" screen over a 15.4" laptop. I want to give it to Sean, but I also don't want to lose the convenience of surfing the net, checking e-mail, and other light tasks without having to be at my desk. The iPad would be perfect for these tasks, and I think the iPad will be an awesome recipe book for use in the kitchen.
So I want this glorified e-reader/netbook/tablet. But, do I want to pay for it? I am not thrilled with the pricing. The 16GB price is great yes, but I want more. I am thinking 32GB will be good. But, if I want 3G I have to pay $729 for 32GB. I am not sure it is worth that much to me. So it looks like I have to make a decision... pay the reasonable price for the base model and hope it has enough storage space and that I never need 3G, or suck it up and pay $600-729 for a 32GB model. At the moment I am thinking 32GB WiFi model, but I am uncertain about it. Oh well, it will be quite a while before I can get one anyway. They aren't even availble yet, and it is most likely going to be my birthday present. (I will be 30, eep!)
