Velchro

How cool is velchro! It's one of those things that i've never actually taken the time to understand, and come to fully appreciate, but i've been sitting at the computer for the past 2 and a half hours, and there's a piece of velchro sitting here, and i've been looking at it, and trying to work it out- and it's really quite a fascinating invention. So for those of you who have never actually taken the time to take a good look at velchro, here's how it works;
there's two sides- one side (on my bit is yellow) and has, say, a couple of hundred teeny tiny plastic hooks. Like they're so small that you can't really see that they're hooks until you look at them up close. Like, they curl up at the end so they're like little itty bitty hooky things.
So on the other bit of the velchro, there's million of tiny black fibres- like so fine, and there's a whole heap of them, all sort of tangled, and covering the area. When you close the bit of velchro, the little black fibre doobies kind of get caught on the little yellow hooks- like they almost jump out to the plastic hooks, and get stuck on them, so the velchro is locked shut. And then when you pull it apart, you're actually breaking some of the little fibres, but some of them just get uncaught- that's what that ripping sound is.
Anyways, it's cool because there are so many tiny little things that we take for granted in this world, and i think that velchro just happens to be one of them. I do think, however, that the invention is far more complicated than is necessary. I mean, plastic hooks, fine little fibres- whatever happened to good old fashioned shoe-laces. So much easier. But not half as cool!

Adds to my list of crazeh obsessions:
Minesweeper
Spider solitaire
Peel off face-masks
Random bouts of speaking in french (not particularly well)
and now... velchro!
