Competitive music.

In a rare event, NYC public television has been fascinating for almost two hours tonight. They are interviewing musicians right now, and one of them introduced (to me) the concept of "competitive music," and how it has burdened or destroyed personal musical growth. Kids, teens, families, who are constantly bombarded by music as a comodity, music as a competition, have much less reason to pursue musical creation themselves. It's so true. That makes me sad. The most wonderful  joy I have ever experienced from music was not as a listener, but as a participant...with the possible exception of watching someone you love perform music, which is just utterly fantastic.

Is competitive music preventing us from experiencing the true joys of music?
