I'm not sure how it is at other places, but everyone at my work feels the need to have pleasantries with one another everyday. A day cannot go by without at least a "hello" or "hi" passing between myself and them. That's fine; I don't have a problem with that. It might be weirder if I saw these people everyday and never said anything. But some people feel the need to have a little more than that, but not actually put forth the effort or attention to that little more.
I present an example:
"Hi Alex."
"Hey."
--at this point, I'm ready to move on. You know... work? But not them. Even though their not actually looking at me, but the paper in their hand.
"How's it going?"
"Not bad," is my reply. And I start to walk off, their question answered. And then they say.
"Oh, you know, allright." Answering my unasked question of how THEIR day is going. Interesting.
Another example:
"What's up, Alex?"
"Hey!"
"Pretty good." Again, a similar situation to example one; they obviously aren't paying attention to what I'm saying, SO WHY DO THEY ASK ME FURTHER QUESTIONS?
I can forgive many things, but not paying attention to the answer to a question you asked is not among them.
Some people at my work also have an almost Office Space way about them. This one person's mood is entirely dependant on what day of the week it is. You ask them how they're doing on monday and their response is "well, you know, it's monday." You ask them on wednesday, it's "well, wednesday, so almost the weekend." If friday, "It's friday." Every week. I could almost punch them.
