Pieces of a puzzle

A small convoy of vehicles traveled down an industrial road in Singapore. The windows were tinted black and they rolled through several stoplights. They turned down a dark street, the dark vehicles almost swallowed up in the surrounding shadows. The headlights were the only things keeping the street from going pitch black. The vehicles were halfway ( Read more... )

Acknowledging the line between 'business' and 'personal', John decided to wait for Silver inside her quarters at her castle in Symkaria. What they needed to discuss had nothing to to with work. In truth, John would love to have skipped the conversation all together, but he owed her an explanation of his recent isolation.

He slipped in through the hidden passage she'd shown him and took a seat on the sofa under a window to wait.

After landing in Symkaria, Silver had Lorna take over the boy's welfare. Silver left instructions to give him a guest room and have Jun guard the room. Chen would handle talking to the small boy tomorrow morning. Hopefully, without her necklace.

The silver-haired mercenary rolled her shoulders as she headed for her room. She had been taking more solo assignments recently, and so far it was agreeing with her. Except that she seemed a little lax in being prepared in her own room.

She hadn't expected anyone dropping by for a visit. John Preston especially after he had been purposefully distancing himself from her. She frowned a little as she closed the door behind her. Her mind hadn't quite clicked off of business mode.

"Did you need something, Preston?"

Well, that was about the reaction he'd expected. He started re-thinking the wisdom of his coming here for about the hundredth time that day.

He managed, just barely, not to sigh. And, had no idea what to say.

"I wanted to... apologize. Talk. Unless you'd rather I left?"

That caught her a little off-guard. This was not the normal way of things for her. "No... you may stay."

Silver hesitated before removing her hooded jacket. She draped it over a nearby chair before making her way over to sit beside John. She attempted to keep her poise. Which was easier said then done. Though she did have the clarity of mind to not start off sitting in his lap.

"I know I've been acting strangely. Isolating myself, outside of work. It's on the tip of my tongue to say that I didn't mean to... when I suppose, in actuality, it's more accurate to say I didn't want to."

He scrubbed a hand through his hair in frustration and attempted to make sense of what he wanted to say.

"Someone I thought was dead popped up, suddenly. Alive and well, and completely unaware that the rest of the world had given him up as dead. It brought up unanswered questions and reopened old wounds."

"I had to try to put it all back together on kind of short notice..."

Silver was quiet for a moment. There was this plunging feeling heading for the pit of her stomach. "And I assume that the distancing was due to the return of a former lover."

Which left her... where? Was he apologizing so he could go back? Or because of the distance? She had wishes, but they meant so little in the face of the uncertainty.

"Yes," he nodded and sighed. "In reality, he'd been gone without a trace for more than six months. But, because of the nature of his disappearance, it seems to him he's just stepped out the door and returned home."

"I had to work up my nerve to talk to him and explain why he had come back to an empty home. Actually... I was half convinced I wouldn't survive the conversation itself." He managed a wry grin that really didn't feel humorous at all. "In retrospect, I probably should have warned you in advance in case it did go badly..."

"I'm sorry, though. Truly. For being so distant. I didn't want you to think I'd lost interest or changed my mind. I haven't."

Of course, at this point, he realized that it was entirely up to her whether anything continued between them or not.

It was hard for her to remain quiet through his explanation. She had wanted to interrupt him a couple times and admonish him. How dare he make her think he was going to become the next assassin or villain to come after her! But she held her tongue and let him finish.

She was relieved he was still interested. More than she thought she would or should have been. Silver pressed her lips together momentarily as she tried to piece words together.

That and not pin him to the couch and kiss him harder than he had ever been in his life.

"Your apology is accepted. I could not do any less for you." She made sure she held his gaze levelly. "But I do not want you regretting a decision to continue a relationship with me, John. I have lived through many, and I do not want you to be one."

His relief melted into puzzlement at her last words. He cocked his head to the side a bit as he regarded her.

"Why would I regret it? I've enjoyed all the time we've spent together. At work and beyond."

"Unless you want things to change?"

"I don't know. But for now, you haven't drawn the ire of my ex-husband or thought assassination was good career choice starting with me." She smiled mirthlessly. "And you would be leagues harder to deal with than my previous lovers."

It took all Silver had to keep her hand steady as she gently placed it on John's leg. "I do not want things to change for the worse or lonely. I would miss not being welcome in your arms."

"I have no interest in assassination. You or otherwise." He chuckled. "I'd like to think that there are easier ways to end a relationship, should the need arise."

He covered her hand with his and smiled at her. "You're far from unwelcome. And, I don't like change."

"Good. I would still win, but it would be hard and costly." She gave him a small smile. Even though she was not kidding in the least.

It had been awhile. She knew it had been far too long when the warm skin of his palm covered her hand. Silver lifted his hand out of the way.

"Some change can be good," she countered as she slid into his lap. Silver decided it had definitely been too long. She missed his warmth.

John laughed, but didn't dispute her statement. She probably would win. He would end up running. Ah well.

He wrapped his arms tightly around her and held her close. He took a deep breath and released it slowly. Yes, it had been much too long.

"I missed you."

They really needed to stop doing these long breaks in Silver's opinion. She was quickly becoming very used to John's presence outside of her professional life.

She caressed her fingers underneath his jaw as she leaned close. "Good. The feeling was definitely mutual."

She kissed him softly.

John would whole-heartedly agree with that sentiment. He planned to keep breaks down to a minimum from now on. As much as life and work allowed.

He kissed her back slow and deep. He'd missed being close to her. So, he was going to take his time getting reacquainted.

Silver's hand slid from beneath his jaw to let her fingers tangle in his hair. She loved the feel of those strands between her fingers. And he kept his hair long enough for her to have a good hold on him. She needed it as her spine almost melted.

Though being a puddle in John's lap sounded just as good to her.

She opened herself to however deep he wanted to kiss. She wanted whatever he was willing to give to her.
