LOS ANGELES (CBS) More than 3,000 firefighters are battling wind-driven brush fires around Southern California.

Flames have scored nearly 17,000 acres across four counties, killing thousands of chickens at a farm, destroying at least one home and threatening several others.

The worst of the fires is raging out of control in the Chatsworth section of Los Angeles, on the northwestern edge of the city's San Fernando Valley. Fires also are burning to the west in the Moorpark area of Ventura County and to the east in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

Areas evacuated include Box Canyon, Woolsey Canyons, Lake Manor, Old Agoura, Oak Park, and Bell Canyon. Only about 5% of the fire has been contained. Flames are moving close to homes in the Bell Canyon area near Chatsworth.

The Chatsworth fire is burning to the edge of a number of multi- million-dollar homes that abut hillsides separating Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Many of the large, ranch-style residences are also home to animals. Karen Knipscheer of Los Angeles City Animal Services reports at least 30 horses, 15 alpacas, four goats, a parakeet and a pig have been evacuated. The animals are being housed at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley.

In San Timoteo, the Riverside County Fire Department reports that 1160 acres have burned, threatening about 100 homes. About 25 percent of the fire has been contained, and full containment is expected by 6 p.m. today, depending on weather developments. Only voluntary home evacuations have taken place.
