Chapter 1

Ruki’s POV

~~

"Do you wanna get something to eat?" Reita asked after letting go of my hand.

"Sure. I can't seem to eat before we go on.  So I'm always half starved after we finish."

He laughed.

"Allright.  So, what do you wanna get?"

"There's a place around the corner that stays open late.  For the drunks, I think."

As I started to turn, leading the way, he grabbed my arm.

"Walk?" he asked, surprised.

"Yeah. Why?"

He pointed.

To a very nice motorcycle.

"Yours?"

He smiled, nodding.

"Straight A's and my birthday.  It was a very pleasant surprise."

I looked at it, then back at him.

“It’s really not that far.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about sitting behind him on the thing.

Clinging to him as he goes around the corner.

Yeah, not really a good idea.

I might get nervous and let go.

I didn’t like the idea of falling on my ass.

Sitting at the table, I remembered something.

"You said straight A's.  You're still in high school?"

"How old do you think I am?"

"Well, you were in a club that serves alcohol. You tell me."

"So were you. It doesn't prove anything," he finished, smiling.

"OK. You got me there. But you just seem… Don't take this wrong, but you act a lot older than the idiots at my school."

"Thank you."

After a moment he went on, "My parents aren't around a lot.  So I guess I've had to grow up kinda fast."

All too soon, it was time to go.

"Can I see you tomorrow?"

I scrunched up my nose.

"We only play on Friday nights.  That's the deal I had to make with my parents."

"Not the band, silly.  I mean can I see you?" he emphasized by poking a finger in my shoulder.

"Oh.  Sure," and I could feel the heat from a blush spreading across my cheeks.

“What time can I pick you up?”

“Um. How about we meet outside the club?”

He tilted his head to one side.

“I guess.  When?”

I was glad he let it drop, quickly agreeing on a time.

I stood there for a moment, watching him fade away into the night, before turning around and heading for home.

"So, where are we going?" I asked walking up to him as he turned off the engine.

"Ever been to the youth center?"

I shook my head.

It just seemed too lame to ever consider.

Only the losers went to the youth center.

At least, that's what everybody else always said.

"There having a little party there tonight. Actually, it's something they do most weekends.  Ya know, give the kids somewhere to go to keep them off the streets and out of trouble."

I had to ask, "You get in trouble a lot?"

He laughed, "All the time."

We walked in together, stopping just inside the door to hang up our jackets.

I was surprised.

The music was pretty good.

"I know.  Not as good as you and your friends.  But not too bad, huh?"

I looked at him in surprise.

"Are you some kinda mind reader?"

I’d better be careful if he is.

"No.  But being in a band I figured the first thing you'd notice would be the music."

"And then the lame decorations, right?" I asked him, smiling.

“Yeah,” he smiled back, “But the food’s decent.”

He took my elbow, guiding me around the room.

Stopping to get some snacks.

Then heading for a semi-quiet corner.

I munched quietly, watching some of the other kids dancing.

He looked at me, searchingly.

“What?”

It made me more than a little nervous.

“Wanna dance?” he finally asked.

I nodded, standing.

He slowly led me to a spot on the floor.

Not too close to anyone.

The music was slow.

The lights were dim.

Well, dim-ish.

Especially with my face hidden in his chest.

I tried not to sigh.

He even smelled good.

All too soon the music changed.

I wrinkled up my nose.

“I can’t dance to that crap.”

He laughed.

“Good. Neither can I.  Wanna get some air?”

We both turned, as he headed for a different door.

Stepping outside, I took a deep breath.

Savoring the slightly chilly air.

I felt him step up behind me.

Leaning his chin on my shoulder he asked softly, “Would you hit me if I kissed you?”

I turned around in surprise.

“You wanna kiss me?”

“Yeah. I do.  I really like you, Ruki. I like being with you. So, what do you think?”

“I like you too.”

Then his lips were softly caressing mine.

I felt his hand cup my cheek as I leaned into him.

Warmth flooded thru me.

From his lips and his hands.

And just as suddenly I was cold.

He’d taken a step back.

A very serious look on his face.

“We should probably go back inside now.”

I must’ve looked as shocked as I felt.

He wrapped his arms around me.

“I just don’t wanna mess this up. Not with you,” he whispered into my ear.

I was on a cloud the rest of the night.

A/N: Proof that I really love you guys/gals.  I got this all written tonight.
And for those of you that read 'Kept'...my idea of their date would include the line: “I just don’t wanna mess this up. Not with you,” he whispered into my ear.
Cuz I just LOVE the idea of Rei saying that to Ruke.
