Compass Controversy

"The Golden Compass" is now showing. By brother Nunik and I will watch it later. It'll be nice to watch it with him because he's read the books too, so we can discuss it more.

There's plenty of feedback going on about the movie, the books and the author, Phillip Pullman. Much like the noise made over Harry Potter a few years back, Christian and Catholic groups are calling for the boycott/ban of anything related to The Golden Compass or Phillip Pullman.

Personally, I really think that they're overacting on this. If people were steadfast in their faith, they shouldn't worry about a book or a movie. Taking a revolt like this doesn't give a positive message to those that may take Pullman's view seriously. Such reactions actually bring to mind the olden times when people crucify women they think of as witches, giving them asinine trials (tie her to a stone, throw her into water and if she floats, she's a witch). It's kind of like telling a kid he can't have something and not explaining why. The kid's bound to rebel and do the thing you're scared of in the first place.

I remember my uncle tell me about a teacher in their school who didn't go for banning the Harry Potter series even if she were against them. Instead, she had her students read it, and they discussed it. Her method actually helped the students understand why there was a stand against the books.

I read the books. I've read other of Phillip Pullman's works. I guess it's just how my mind works, but I didn't read between the lines. I didn't think Pullman was attacking the church or God, or anyone's faith. To me, it was just a story. A story that I enjoyed, that I wouldn't hesitate to let other people read. Up to you how you interpreted it.

And I'm off to watch the movie.

P.S. Found these articles off the Internet. I don't neccessarily support/agree/disagree with what's said in them, but they do provide an interesting read.
