manila, manila

Riding the LRT 1 line gives me a great view of the City of Manila. Squatters and unsightly things that you may come across, it's fascinating to see the city as you go by. I especially admire the old buildings that have excellent designs and are at par with other old buildings in different countries. One of these days, I'm going to go around Manila and take a look at them up close.

By the way, today is Araw ng Maynila. There's probably some sort of celebration around Baywalk tonight. It's Lito Atienza's last few days before Fred Lim takes over. I wonder how it'll all turn out. Oh well.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer has a City of Manila special today. It's a really interesting read. I realized that Manila is one of my favorite cities. It grows on you, and once you look past the things that might turn you off, it's really a pretty nice place. I lived there for a few years, I work there now. I roam around Recto for cheap books and have been to Quiapo for deeveedees (and I have to agree with the writer Sunday Inquirer Magazine when he said the stock of films in Quiapo are not your usual fare of Hollywood films, but even art films). I've been to Chinatown (went with Presea on a walking tour) and felt like I've stepped into a different world. And of course, who hasn't been to Divisoria? Yay Manila!

I guess Manila offers a mix of the past and the present. Scary as it may seem at first, it's still a good place to take a look at. Who knows what treasures you may find? :)

My parents left for Candelaria today. It's also the 5th death anniversary of my Lola Lilay. Funny, I forgot about that. I'd rather remember her birthday.
