let it snow

Plan to shower Baguio with snow draws objections"

During college, come the 'ber' months, we would haul out our thicker jackets, scarfs and bonnets and don them especially if we have classes at 7:30 in the morning. Waiting for your teacher to come an open the classroom isn't a joke when the weather is close to 12 degrees C.

Every once in a while someone would broach the idea of making fake snow for Baguio, just to fit the Christmas mood. Our discussions always end up with all of us agreeing that though it may be a fun idea, it won't be practical.

First, it will be expensive. God knows how much a snow-making machine costs to buy, then ship and assemble, and then to make it function, plus maintaining it.

Second, though it's cold, it may not be enough to keep the snow from melting. If God meant for it to snow in the Philippines, He would have made it so from the very beginning.

Third, if the snow melts, it will create puddles of water and given Baguio's sewage system, it won't be pretty (have you ever experienced flooding in Baguio? It has happened, folks).

Fourth, should the snow not melt, it won't look pretty. People will be tramping about it, playing and enjoying the novelty of playing in the snow. Siempre mabubunkal yung snow, so lalabas yung lupa sa ilalim. Besides, if they plan to only let it 'snow' for a few minutes a day, it will all turn to slush. And slush isn't pretty, especially if you live in the city.

The plan to let snow fall in the city for a few minutes a day is certainly a brave attempt, but I don't think it's practical or advisable. Maybe if they decide to dedicate a certain part of Burnham park for this project and open it to public, it might be good.

Though if real snow falls in Baguio City, count on me to be on the next bus there.

baguio, thoughts, wala lang
