And he looks so damn sweet! That is one of the scenes I'm most looking forward to. It's such a quiet thing, too, so that I was expecting it wouldn't even make it to the cut, but there he is. *skippy happy dances*
It's such an iconic scene for the franchise, though, that I never really doubted it would be in, especially after reading the comments made by the director and Sam about how broken and damaged Finnick really is. Of course, I never dreamed they'd cut the noose tying scene in Catching Fire, since it's foreshadowing for Katniss hanging Seneca Crane in effigy, so what do I know? :P
That's kind of how I look at how much they condensed all the cave stuff in the first film. How are they supposed to have the round table of "Katniss so can't act by a script, so how do we fix her camera presence" when none of the things they talk about being her best moments (aside from volunteering) were ever covered in the films? It's pivotal for how they campaign to the districts and leads to the propos to begin with. All these things they cut for the sake of creating the non-existent love triangle for the screen are so directly tied to how she handles/is handled in the other books, and yet ... Her most heroic moments -- like the sleeping drought -- are gone

I keep seeing jokes* on Tumblr about starting a petition to have the first movie remade with Francis Lawrence directing so that all those little things that were lost in the first film would be put back in where they belong. Gary Ross didn't think it was important for Peeta to lose his leg, either, and that lessened the impact of Mags' sacrifice when they escaped from the fog.
When I first read your Finnick makes it to the end bit, I was in the middle of a coughing attack (that dry cough you get at the end of a cold that won't stop until it's good and ready to stop), but your rant distracted the cough and made it go away. \o/ Thank you for that.
