2013 Fanfiction Writing Meme

Jan 02, 2014 11:50

I've seen several of my friends doing this, so I thought I'd jump on that train, too. (This particular version was lovingly gakked from baronesskika on Tumblr.) :)

2013 Writing Meme:

Total number of completed stories in 2013:

I completed 16 stories. Of those 16, 15 were also started in 2013, but 1 was started much earlier (Treading Water took me about 14 months to write).

Total word count:

111,560 words, if I don't count TW. I have no idea how much of TW I wrote in 2013, but I do know it wasn't anywhere near the total word count of the fic (199,343 words). Oy.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?

Probably a bit more than I thought I would. For a while there, I thought I was burnt out after TW, but now I'm thinking, not so much with the burnt out.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

The only real risk I took this year was the fairy tale challenge this past spring. I'd never written anything like The Flower Trying to Bloom in Snow before, so I was able to stretch my writing muscles, so to speak, melding together the Hunger Games with an old folk tale and still being able to make them both recognizable. It took some time and effort to distill Annie, Snow, and Mags down to what makes them them - not physical characteristics, but the things that make them do the things they do.

Do you have any specific fanfic goals for the New Year?

* Write TW's sequel, Diving Under (I have the first chapter well under way, but I keep getting sidetracked by ficathons and challenges and birthdays)
* Finish Down the Rabbit Hole (chapter 2 (of 3) about 3/4 complete, but see whining from #1)
* Write the sequel to Victorious and Rebellious - Notorious (I started writing this for whiskeysnarker's birthday, but then realized it was going to be a thing, so there's that)

From my past year of writing, what was…

My best story of this year:

I'm fond of several of them, but the best is probably Madrigal.

My most popular story of this year:

Again, ignoring TW, which blows everything else I've written out of the water, I'd have to say, based on comments at AO3, that would be Rebellious. Based on reviews at FFN, that would be Madrigal.

Most fun story to write:

Happy Endings Are Overrated - it was so much fun putting together Mags' backstory and the history of District 4.

Hardest story to write:

If by harder, we're talking emotional toll, that would be Closing Walls and Ticking Clocks, because OMG, killing all my favorite characters so that Finnick was the sole survivor of the Quarter Quell? And the things that came after for both him and for Annie? I made myself cry.

Biggest Disappointment:

That would be the fic I wrote for the currently still anonymous Hunger Games Holiday Fic Exchange. I like the fic, but it's not getting much attention. The pinch hit I wrote for it, though, is making up for that. ;)

Story I haven’t yet written, but intend to:

Provided I don't run out of steam (not likely until at least after Mockingjay part 2 is out), I'd like to write Finnick's story from the start until the announcement of the Quarter Quell (since I've already written/am writing what comes after that). I'd also like to do the same thing for Annie and for Johanna. I'd also like to explore Darius, figure out just what made him step in and try to save Gale from that whipping when the cost to him was so high.

And now for my own little addendum to this meme...

Please ask me any questions you'd like regarding writing or my stories so far or any future stories I've mentioned here.
