Help Japan and a pupdate

Mar 15, 2011 11:55

The devastation in Japan since the initial massive quake and subsequent tsunami is just incredible and the reports that are coming in now indicate that things are still getting worse. I want to help but I have very little money to donate myself (I am going to see if there are any offerings I can afford, though). I've gone through my backlog and got a couple more drabbles done and have a plan to complete the other fics that I owe, so...

Since I've been able to make some headway, and since RL has settled doewn a bit so that I have some time to work on fannish things, I've signed up at help_japan to write a 1,000-word (or more) fic. My thread is here. Fandoms are BSG, Being Human (UK), or Farscape. Other fandoms are negotiable - I just thought it might be a good idea to limit myself to the fandoms that are easier for me to write. The opening bid is $5. The auction is open until March 26.

And right at this moment? I really want to write something for Being Human. Like, a lot. (OMG! That finale!)

Minie is now roughly 11 weeks old and about twice the size she was when we got her, which has been not quite 3 weeks. She's all legs and teeth. Of course, when you look at her, all you see is the legs -- the teeth are much more insidious. She surprised my husband yesterday when she jumped up onto the couch with him, because every other time she wanted up, she was so little that she would just sit down and look up at him, nodding her head twice, asking for a lift. (Sitting down and nodding her head twice means she wants up in your lap if you're sitting, or to be picked up and held if you're standing. She made that up on her own.)

Since we got her from a shelter and the shelter contract requires that she be spayed, she had her surgery last Thursday. She's already pretty well recovered from it with no incidents. She never tried to lick at her incision and she never played so roughly that she opened up her stitches.

Spots and the cats have finally accepted that we're not giving her back to the shelter. Spots and Bert (who is the undisputed alpha of the furry ones in our house) are both starting to play with her. Now, if we could just get Spots to play with her quietly, rather than barking her fool head off, all would be good. Minie herself hardly ever barks.

We're still working on the housetraining, but it seems to be going well. The only time she has accidents in the house are when we aren't paying attention. She's learned so many other things so quickly, that I'm thinking of implementing something our neighbors did with their dogs -- they have a bell on a string on the back door and when the dogs need to go out, they grab the bell and let it hit the door, which rings it loudly enough for the humans to hear and come open the door for them. Pretty cool, huh?
