Toes

The ejection ‘chute was snatched up by the wind and dragged Kara across the rugged landscape. She scrabbled for purchase, anything she could grab onto to slow or, better yet, stop the frantic motion, but there was nothing. Nothing, that is, until the frakking rock came out of nowhere and stopped her in her tracks.

She cried out in pain as her kneecap shattered, her own scream deafening within her helmet. The wind ripped the parachute away; Kara was lucky the only thing damaged badly was her knee. And it wasn’t even the first time for that.

Some time later, she opened her eyes on the orange-yellow sky and realized that she must have blacked out from the pain. Rising up on her elbows, she looked down at her knee, half expecting her flight suit to be in shreds, but the fabric wasn’t even torn. Gritting her teeth, she wiggled her toes, relieved that she was able to do that one little thing. Maybe if she got off this godsforsaken rock, she wouldn’t lose her leg.
