The Son
In the last minutes I am frantic.
I manipulate the connections expertly,
the master creator; life is in my hands
and as I hold my breath, I sweat.
Will he be all I have hoped for,
all I have dreamed? In his eyes I see
only the unknown future, a blank gaze
into space and uncertain humanity.
Now he is almost complete, the greatest work
I may ever know. My hands almost tremble
as I secure the final wires and step back.
He is ready to be born, to awake.
He will be as was his brother, but
I cannot let him live if he repeats that path
of deception and death. My failure once before
when I was blind to inadequacy.
No, this one is different. I am not so naïve
nor reckless in my effort. He will work,
the triumph of my life’s research,
the life I have forever sought to realize.
Before activation, I must look again
and wonder where life will lead him.
He is innocent, a being new to existence
that is full and complex, and frightening.
But will he feel afraid? Will he feel at all?
Ultimately, I can only give him the programming
to think and analyze and dream for himself
the dreams that only an android man can dream.
