20 Random Facts About Jimmy Olsen

1. When Jimmy was a kid, all he wanted to do was grow up to be an astronaut. But when he got his first camera at fourteen, his fantasies of outer space were long forgotten, replaced with something even better. It all panned out for sure when he got his first Pulitzer in 2007, for his photo of Superman rescuing a plane-full of people from the waters of the Metropolis River, and that suits him just fine; he'd rather leave all the flight and space travel to Richard and Clark, anyway.

2. After dating Trisha Taylor in the tenth grade, Jimmy knows for sure that he just isn't into girls. That fact comes as little surprise to his parents, much to his own chagrin. They could've at least clued him in.

3. Working at the Daily Planet is the most terrifying, thrilling, and rewarding thing Jimmy's ever done. Nothing in his life ever compares, until Jason takes an interest in photography, and asks his Uncle Jimmy to teach him.

4. Every once in a while, someone will ask Jimmy why he never had kids. The truth is, he never saw any need to, not with Clark and Lois's brood constantly around, and later Richard and Lana's boys; he's had his hands full just being an uncle!

5. He never tells Clark, but Jimmy was onto his alter-identity almost as long as Perry was. He always felt like it gave him an advantage, but the unfortunate flip side of knowing turned out to be having to bite his tongue around Lois for eight unbelievably long years. Seriously, how's a person supposed to not tell one of their best friends that her son isn't just Superman's, but also their other best friend's?

6. Jimmy isn't out at the office until the fall of 2015, when he starts dating Ryan Choi. Much to his chagrin, everybody already knows. Again. So much for discretion.

7. At the same time, he's grateful to realize that only a few people ever knew about his massive crush on Clark, that has only now really faded. Sad, that it took so long for him to get over his best friend, when it was always clear just how much Clark and Lois were meant to be.

8. Jimmy doesn't actually feel tested as a photographer until Clark comes back from his 'hiatus' (as everyone comes to call his 5-year absence). His future starts to look bleak as he manages to miss shot after perfect shot for an entire week, until the Planet globe finally falls and Superman catches it-right in front of his camera. He doesn't think he could ever thank Clark enough for that awesome coincidence.

9. Contrary to what some people around the office seem to think-coughPollyandGilcough-Jimmy doesn't have flings. Never that; it's tacky and distasteful. He's just... had a lot of boyfriends. It's not his fault that most of his relationships haven't worked out. Well, mostly not his fault. That time with Hartley Rathaway was a mercy break-up-seriously, Hart was so in love with James Jesse that Jimmy just couldn't bear it-and the time with Connor Hawke was just a disaster waiting to happen, with how much Connor reminded Jimmy of Ryan.

10. Having known Lois through shared journalism classes and work on the MetU Chronicle, Jimmy's psyched to work with her again at the Planet during his internship in the spring of '98 and after he gets hired upon his graduation from MetU in May. Their friendship is legendary from there on out. At least until Clark gets hired later that year, and Jimmy and Lois both fall for the newbie, unbeknownst to Lois. Though Jimmy has a hard time dealing for a while, he pretends that nothing's changed, for all their sakes.

11. When Ryan disappears into what people eventually call the Convergence Event, Jimmy's up to his eyeballs in documenting the worldwide disappearances of thousands of people. He doesn't realize his boyfriend of twelve years is gone until almost a week later, and then proceeds to crawl so far into a bottle that it takes six months for Lois and Clark to coax him back out. Rehab is a foregone conclusion by that point, and he's surprised when Richard offers to pay for it, just to get his star photographer back. Still, nothing is the same with Ryan gone.

12. During the time Jimmy's in rehab, he's glad to have left the photography department in Jason's capable hands. He couldn't have picked a better person to succeed him, at least temporarily, and eventually for good.

13. Jimmy feels privileged to be the first one that Bruce Jonathan comes out to. He never thought of himself as a gay role model, but the chance to impart a little hard-earned wisdom is a fantastic ego-booster. He figures Clark and Lois owe him for helping out another one of their kids, too.

14. By far, the worst relationship Jimmy ever has is with Ted Kord in 2013. It starts out great-a few chance meetings through Lois's work as League Press Liaison, a few dates, a weekend spent geeking out and screwing each other on every available surface in Ted's penthouse apartment-but when Michael Carter tries to 'come to Ted's rescue' and winds up knocking Jimmy out, breaking his jaw with just one jealousy-fueled punch, everything goes straight to hell. He's surprised when Ted actually makes excuses for that self-absorbed ass-hat, but that's nothing compared to learning three weeks later that Michael and Ted aren't just partners in the work sense anymore. Whatever. They deserve each other. No, scratch that. Turns out they really are good for each other, and Jimmy feels like a heel for being so bitter, when Booster actually mans up and apologizes for the punch.

15. Jimmy has one photo that he's never shared with a single soul. In it, Superman is standing in the still-smoking ashes of a burned out warehouse, the limp, broken body of a teenage boy in his arms and an expression of complete grief crumpling his face. Learning later that the boy is one of a dozen or so clones of Clark, none of which survived the explosion, Jimmy decides that no one needs to see what he saw that day.

16. Always trying to stay ahead of the curve, Jimmy graduated from high school two years early, earned his Bachelor's two years after that, and won his first Pulitzer by age twenty-seven. He's proud of his accomplishments, but doesn't like to brag about them, so when Ryan finds out about those milestones, Jimmy doesn't stop blushing for a whole afternoon.

17. The day Lois tried to convince him to dress in drag to help her chase a story, Jimmy nearly turned in his press badge and quit the Planet on the spot, he was so offended by her assumptions of his free-time activities. It took Richard's tact to convince him otherwise, and Lois getting him coffee for a week to mend their friendship. Because seriously, he'd rather leave the cross-dressing for great justice to the professionals, thank you very much.

18. Jimmy's parents both die in a fire in Bakerline when he's thirty-seven. As much as he wants to, he just can't blame Clark or anyone else for not getting there in time. Convincing Clark that it's not his fault takes a long time, though, and it takes a lot of beer and commiseration for their friendship to be okay again.

19. When Jimmy's fifty-two-and doesn't yet look his age, thank goodness-he has a weekend... thing, complete with an open invitation for the future, with Dick Grayson and Roy Harper, both men nearly twenty years his junior. It's completely unexpected, surprising considering they've been married for almost eight years and have a teenage daughter, Lian, but nothing since Ryan's disappearance has made him feel so wanted, so special.

20. In 2041, when Lara-the techie of the Lane-Kents-convinces Jimmy to cover the Annual Biomedical Implants, Prostheses, and Cybernetics Conference in Seattle, the last person he expects to run into is Hartley. After one seminar on advances in hearing-implants, a dinner, a breakfast, an afternoon coffee, and the surprising revelation that Hart's husband, James, disappeared into the Convergence Event just like Ryan did, everything is different. It's like no time at all has passed, and that same spark is still there. This time it's for real. And this time, it lasts.

Bonus Random Fact: Jimmy has been trying for years to get people to call him Jim, but for some reason, it never quite takes, outside of the few random times that his friends humor him. Oh well, 'Jimmy' seems to suit him better, anyway.
