Full-Stop

Another day like this, and Lois thought she might have to just give up the ghost and start working from home for the duration. Bad enough she had to deal with the nausea in the first place, but that it always struck after her morning coffee-a necessity she'd insisted on and that her doctor had assured her was okay in small amounts-and continued on through to the afternoon, striking with no rhyme or reason, was beyond what she'd signed on for.

Not that she'd signed on for any of this, but, well, this was what she got for getting a little too close to her story. First there was intrigue, then a rescue she still insisted had been unnecessary, a little par-for-the-course romance, some more adventure, and bada-bing bada-boom, she wound up carrying Bruce Wayne's demon-child.

Could've happened to anyone, really.

Okay, maybe only to her-she did have a history of getting a little too involved, after all-but it wasn't like she'd done it on purpose.

No matter what those bitches at the scandal mags claimed; Lois Lane didn't need one shiny penny of the Wayne fortune.

Seething with righteous indignation at the Sun's supposed 'exposé' as she tried to finish her article for tomorrow's Planet, she almost wasn't prepared when another wave of nausea hit her. Thank God she'd put that trash can under her desk this mo-

But all thought stopped as her stomach heaved again, this time bringing up the saltines and ginger ale she'd had after losing her lunch in the restroom. Her entire upper digestive system burned even as her stomach quivered with waves of pain, and she couldn't help the groan that turned into something like a sob at the agony.

If this kept up it would be nothing but Carnation Instant Breakfast for the next six months, and that prospect was just no good; even if it seemed to be the only thing she could keep down lately, she hated that stuff.

“You all right?”

Bruce's warm voice and his steady hand on her shoulder should've been a comfort to her, but that was nothing doing in her current state. He'd probably come to take her out to lunch, anyway.

“Do I look all right, Wayne?” she tried to growl, the words instead coming out as some sort of weak grunt as she sat back against her chair, limbs sprawled over the floor. “What?” she spat with a glare at the Planet staff that had stopped to stare at her in her most unglamorous moment, and the flock of imbeciles scattered like spooked pigeons.

That steady hand was on her head then, smoothing back her mussed hair as Bruce knelt beside her, proffering an honest-to-God silk handkerchief for her to clean up with. “Here, let's get you cleaned up and out of here for the day.”

“I hate you,” she groaned in reply, gladly wiping her mouth and nose with the slippery cloth and handing it back to him.

Bruce nodded, pocketing the hankie and taking Lois's hand to help her up. “I know.”

Straightening herself to gather her things, Lois saved her work and shut off her computer. If Perry wanted her story bad enough, he could just get Smallville to fi-

A twist in her stomach brought her full-stop, though, and she grabbed Bruce's arm to keep herself upright, breathing through her nose as she fought down the wave of nausea.

“Shh, it's okay,” he soothed her, hand rubbing small circles on the small of her back. “We'll get you home and settled, and I'll make some of Alfred's best tea.”

Lois took a deep breath and stood straight again, relieved that this one passed without her needing the trash can. Maybe there was hope, after all. If she could only get past today. “I hope you brought Carnation Instant Breakfast, too.”

Bruce chuckled and kissed her on the temple as he escorted her to the elevator. “Anything you want.”

“Damn right.”
