Chasing Shadows

Waking with the sun, despite himself, Tim slips out of the bed in the hotel suite and slips on a gray t-shirt and sweats, runs a hand through his sleep-mussed hair. It's getting too long, but who cares, anyway?

After a quick trip to the bathroom, he wanders back out to find Jason on the balcony, leaning over the balustrade and smoking, wearing a pair of dark jeans and absolutely nothing else, the criss-cross of scars on his back and arms standing out against pale skin in the early light. Not daring to disturb his solitude, Tim just hovers in the open doorway, watching his brother and traveling companion as Jay looks out over the city and takes long drags of his cigarette.

He still can't quite figure out why Jason decided to join him on this trip. To help him search for Bruce, obviously, but for what other purposes remained to be seen. Revenge? Maybe. Reconciliation? Also possible. Or perhaps he was just as scared as Tim, wanting only to find his surrogate father alive and well. Who knew? It could be all of the above, or none of the above. Point was, Jason hasn't exactly been talkative since they left Gotham three weeks ago.

Tim supposes he can't blame him. He hasn't really said much in that time, either.

Looking past Jason then, he gazes out over the city himself. Cairo. It's hot, dry, and dusty, all sorts of rich, earthy colors everywhere, and already baking with the morning sun. The last time he was here was with Bruce and Dick, on their year-long trip for Bruce to find himself. And wasn't that the most ironic thing ever?

Things were so different then. With Dick... it was all about using the Wayne influence to make connections and have a good time while Bruce did his thing. Now, with Jason, it's all work, trading in the Bat's influence, chasing a ghost--no, a shadow--through the grimy alleys of city after city. And with Gotham taken care of, with Dick in the cowl and Damien at his side, Tim doesn't feel so bad about leaving this time. He's free to do what needs to be done, to follow his instincts and bring Bruce home, and really, he prefers it this way.

"You just gonna stand there staring all morning?"

Torn out of his reverie, Tim refocuses to find Jason looking back at him with an intense, blue gaze, cigarette discarded and his hair curling just barely over his eyes.

"Just thinking," he says after a moment, averting his own gaze and running a hand through his hair again.

One corner of Jay's mouth pulls up in a slight smirk. "So what else is new? You wanna get breakfast?"

Tim nods minutely. "Sure. I could use some coffee."

"You and me, both." Stepping across the balcony, Jason slides past him back into the suite, the scents of menthol, tobacco, and clean sweat lingering, and he calls over his shoulder, "Come on, we have work to do."

Following, Tim can't help but be glad Jason came with him, despite their history. He won't admit it out loud, but they make a much better team than he and Dick ever did. Working with Jay, he's certain they'll find Bruce soon, and along the way, maybe even find themselves and each other.
