A/N: I love comments and I don't bite :p
Michael and Brian both parked their bikes outside Michael's house, Michael already looking for his key because his mom was still working at the diner.
Brian followed Michael inside, toe-ig of his shoes and placing them next to Michael's before following him further into the house.
Brian scanned everything around him, noticing how different this house looked from his own. This place felt warm. So very different from his own.
"You want something to drink?" Michael's voice startled him from his inner rivalry.
"Water's fine." Brian replied, his eyes roaming around the kitchen. "This place is...nice."
Michael shrugged, his face hidden behind the fridge's door. "I know it's not much, but it's home."
"Well, like I said, it's nice."
Michael pulled his head out of the fridge and looked at Brian, cocking his head to the side, then he smiled. "Thanks. Here's your water."
Brian caught the water bottle Michael threw him easily. Michael took one himself then went to stand beside Brian.
"So, um," Michael broke the silence, although he was a little nervous. "What would you like to do? I have some comics in my room if you'd like to read them."
Brian shrugged. He wasn't really into reading, but he would like to see Michael's room, because he was intrigued. "Sure."
Michael's face lit up like a kid in a candy store. "Come on, then. Race you up the stairs!"
Before Brian knew what was happening, Michael was pounding up the stairs. Brian followed him and was hot on his heels in no time; longer legs and all that. He suddenly bumped into Michael, not noticing that he had stopped running on time.
Giggling, Michael opened his room and they both stumbled inside, almost falling to the floor. Michael was still stumbling a little, so Brian steadied him.
"Did you drink alcohol or something?"
"No," Michael wrinkled his nose at the question."Why?"
"Because you can't stand steady on your legs." Brian teased.
Michael snorted and punched Brian's shoulder. "Shut up."
Brian smiled, looking at Michael with a look Michael couldn't quite figure out. Before Michael knew it he was tackled onto his bed, with Brian on top of him.
Michael felt himself start blushing, "What are you doing?" he asked, hating how is voice suddenly got a little higher.
"Showing you who's the boss."
Michael snorted. "Well, you showed me. Now get off me, Boss."
"Nope." Brian answered, popping the 'p'. "I'm quite comfortable."
"I bet you are." Michael wiggled arounf a little. "But I'm not."
Brian smiled and leaned down, "Oh come on, Mikey. You like having me on top of you."
Michael tried to surpress the shiver that ran down his spine. "Not really."
Brian's smile turned into a smirk, almost a predator-like one. "Don't lie to me."
Michael stiffened, which seemed to make Brian realise that he had crossed some kind of line. He moved off of Michael and plopped down beside him on his back on the small bed.
They were silent, but it didnt feel awkward. They both stared at the ceiling for a while, then they both turned their heads, looked at each other and smiled.
"So," Brian drawled, "How about those comics?"
Michael was off of the bed in a flash, picking up a few of his favorite comic books from his desk. Brian took them from him and scanned the front pages.
"Captain Astro?" Brian asked, a little surprised and confused. "Never heard of him."
"Really?" Michael's eyes were wide open in shock. "Then it's about time you do." He went to sit beside Brian and looked through the comics, finally holding one out to his new friend. "Here, read this one. It's one of my favorites."
Brian raised an amused eyebrow at the absolutely giddy looking boy in front of him, then opened the comic with a fake sigh and eye roll and started to read. He read through a few pages before looking back over the rim of the book, right into Michael's curious gaze.
"This is pretty good." Brian smirked, "For a comic book."
Michael snorted and rolled his eyes. "What do you read, then?"
"I don't."
"You don't?"
"Nope," Brian popped the 'p' on purpose. "I barely read school books."
Michael rolled his eyes, "Of course you don't."
Brian didn'tr react, just kept on reading and skipping through the pages of his comic book. Michael smiled, glad that Brian liked Captain Astro, and picked up another one to read himself.
Both boys were still reading comic books, Michael recommending the best ones to Brian, when a female voice came up from down the stairs.
"Michael? I'm home, honey."
Suddenly, Michael could feel Brian tense up beside him. The boy had been pretty relaxed the whole time, reading comic books, but now that Michael's mom was home; that calm, relaxed boy seemed to be gone.
"I'll be right there, mom!" Michael called back, then looked over at Brian. "You coming?"
Brian hesitated, then nodded tightly. He stood up from the bed and quietly followed Michael down the stairs.
"Mom," Michael bounded into the kitchen, leaning up on his titoes to kiss his mother on the cheek while she bend through her knees a little so he could reach her. "I brought a...friend from school home."
Michael honestly didn't know if he could call Brian a friend yet, but, he had stood up for him, so...yeah, he was considered a friend already, in such a short time.
"You did?" Debbie asked, still cuting the vegetables she had started before Michael came into the kitchen. "Who is it, honey? Not Ted or Emmett I presume."
"No. His name is Brian." Michael answered, "He's new in our school."
"Oh." Debbie said, suddenly interested, "Well, where is he?"
Michael peeked around the corner, saw Brian fidgeting with his hands a little. He waited until Brian looked u, gave him an encouraging smile and nudged his head towards the kitchen, mouthing 'come on', then turned back towards his mother.
"He's right here, mom." Michael waited until Brian had steped into the kitchen for introductions."Brian, meet my mom. Mom, meet Brian."
"Hi," Debbie said, wiping her hands on a towel before extending her hand to Brian, who wanted to shake it, but found himslf pulled into a hug instead. "This is how we do things in this family, honey."
When Debbie released Brian, the poor boy looked surprised as hell, maybe even a little scared. It was obvious that he completely wasn't used to this Italian, crazy hospitality. Michael had never known anything else but being hugged warmly and kissed on the cheek by his mother whenever he came bck home from school. Brian on the other hand clearly hadn't.
Brian looked over to Michael, who just smiled at him. "My mom has Italian roots. You'll get used to it." A small, awkward pause."If...you want to come over again, of course."
Brian didn't answer, but gave Michael half a smile. He really didn't know how to answer, because he didn't know what to expect of this meeting.
"So, Brian." Debbie said, already getting back, "Are you staying for dinner?"
Brian looked over at Michael again, then back at Debbie. "I don't know..."
"Don't be silly." Debbie said, making sure there was no room for discussing or disagreement. "You're staying for dinner. Just call your parents, I'm sure they won't mind."
Debbie saw something change in the boy, although she couldn't figure quite out what.
"I...um. My parents are still working."
"Well, the more reason for you to stay for dinner."
Brian ducked his head, looking kind of shy. It was a weird look on him. Even for the short time that Michael had get to know Brian, he didn't peg him as a shy boy.
Seemed like Brian was full of surprises. Good thing that Michael liked surprises. Let's just hope that most of them were good ones.
"Can you set the table, honey?" His mother's voice pulled Michael out of his thoughts.
"Sure mom." Michael answered, already walking to the cupboard he looked over his shoulder to where Brian was standing. "You want to help?"
Brian nodded, took the plates from Michael and brough them to the table. He didn't know where everybody would sit, so Michael helped him set them. Then Brian placed the utensils and the glasses and the table was ready.
"Thank you, boys." Debbie said, putting her food in the oven. "This will take a little while. You boys go back to Michael's room. I'll call you when it's done.'
Brian went quickly out of the kitchen, but tried not to make it look too obvious. Michael folowed straight behind him up the stairs.
Once they were inside Michael's room, they both sat down on the bed . Brian still didn't look relaxed and, to be honest, Michael was getting a little worried.
"Is something wrong?"
Brian put on his mask again and smiled. "Everything's fine, Mikey"
Michael wasn't going to let him off the hook yet, but... "Why are you calling me Mikey? It's the second time you called me that today."
"It's my nickname for you."
Michael smiled. "I like it."
Brian smiled, then picked up the comic book he had been reading before back up again. He knew he was trying to hide, so did Michael, so he hoped he would let him.
Michael, who was actually going to try and ask again what was wrong again, decided to give Brian a break, just for now, and picked up his own comic again.
It wasn't long before Debbie called them down and Brian and Michael went back downstairs. Debbie sat on the end of the table, with Brian and Michael on either side of her, in front of each other.
Dinner went on with Debbie rattling on at what happened at the diner, her work place, while Michael and Brian listened. Or pretented to listen anyway.
Michael was more busy peering at Brian, who was more picking at his food than actually eating it. He looked almost scared to eat. Apparently his mother had noticed too.
"What's wrong, honey?" Debbie asked, sounding worried. "Aren't you hungry?"
Brian shrugged, not looking up from his plate. "Not really."
"You're as thin as a leaf!" Debbie exclaimed. "I don't now what your parents feed you, or if they even feed you at all, but my food is always delicious. Isn't it, Michael?"
"Yes it is, mom." Michael answered, not taking his eyes off of Brian.
Brian's muscles in his shoulders tensed under the scrutiny of mother and son, but he tried to eat some more. It did taste good, better than what Joan ever made, he just didn't know how to act.
"That's better." Debbie smiled when she saw Brian actually eat something. She caught her son's eye and winked at him. Michael gave a small smile back.
After dinner, Michael asked if Brian wanted to stay a bit longer, but Brian, albeit reluctantly, told him he better went home because it was a school night. Something Debbie agreed with of course.
Brian grabbed his bag, Michael followed him to the door. Debbie called goodbye to Brian and wave gave a small wave in return.
"Well," Michael broke the, slightly uncomfortable, silence. "It has been fun."
Brian finally lifted his head and looked into Michael's eyes. They sparkled a little when he smiled at the smaller boy.
"Yeah, it was." He stepped out of the door, put his bag on his back and grabbed his back. "I'll see you around, Michael."
Michael stood in the doorway, lifting up his hand in goodbye. "Bye, Brian."
Brian looked over his shoulder, "Bye Mikey." He winked and then jumped on his bike and left.
Michael stood there smiling until Brian was out of his sight.
