Mom told me years ago how she had almost named me Jennifer Rebecca, and how, when she changed her mind and named me Katherine Elizabeth instead, my grandmother came to her and thanked her.
When I brought the story up the other night, Mom added something to it. "When I was pregnant with you, there was a TV commercial with a cute little girl on a swing, and an announcer saying, 'This is Jennifer Rebecca.' I always thought it was such a pretty name."
So there you have it. I came this close to being named after a TV commercial.
I love the name Katherine, and I love the name Elizabeth almost as much. I would hate to be one of millions of Jennifers and Rebeccas born in the late 60s and early 70s. Katherine--and Kate and Katie and Kat, all of which are names I go by (but not Kathy)--is a cheerful, lovely, elegant, bright red name. A Katherine is creative and charming, with just enough common sense.
If I'd been named Jennifer Rebecca, I would be a very practical person with a braying sort of laugh. I'd probably have thicker hair, and I'd wear make-up even when I'm working in the garden. I wouldn't long to own a goat farm, and I wouldn't write stories, but I'd be married to a guy named Sean or Darrell or James and I'd have two kids. I wouldn't have to work, because Sean (or Darrell or James) has a good job as an electrician (or a plumber or a mechanic). I'd be a member of the PTO, and sometimes I'd volunteer to help at the elementary school office. I'd be a den mother. I'd drive an SUV--but only a small one, because we're trying to economize. We have to save for the kids' college educations, after all. We'd live in a comfortable house in an older subdivision, and no matter how hard I try to keep the lawn looking nice the kids would forever be leaving their bikes and things around and cluttering up the place. I'd probably have a dog, but not my Newfoundland Jasper--a smaller dog, good with kids, who doesn't need much brushing. Probably a rescue greyhound.
God, I want to shoot myself now.
Thank you, Mom, for not naming me Jennifer Rebecca.
Oh, and I got some wool today at our spinning guild meeting (Jennifer Rebecca probably knits, but only with Wal-Mart yarn). Here's some of what I spun today--gorgeous, huh? If he likes it, it'll be made into a scarf and hat for
