“Ne, Sho-chan! What are you doing?”
Aiba tugged a bit at the older boy’s T-shirt hoping this way he’ll manage to earn Sho’s attention since he was sitting next to him fifteen minutes at least already but the older boy didn’t talk to him not even a word. But he couldn’t get Sho’s attention this way either, he just brushed away Aiba’s hand and continued scribing feverishly into the notebook what was open at the table.
“Not now, Aiba-chan! I have to finish my homework before…” he added.
“What homework is, Sho-chan?” Aiba asked curiously and cocked his head to the side.
“Homework is given at school so you’ll be smart. And since I’m already going to school, I have homework!” Sho said proudly and looked at the younger boy.
But Aiba wasn’t amazed by this fact. He crossed his hand in front of his body and pouted cutely.
“I hate this school of yours along with your stupid homework!” he said sulking.
“Why? You don’t even know these things…” Sho protested.
“I know them!” Aiba said and stomped his small foot. “School and homework are the things that make Sho-chan not playing with me…”
“Now will you play with me, Sho-chan?” Aiba asked running to the older boy when he saw him in the park.
“Un! What do you want to play, Aiba-chan?” Sho asked smiling from the younger boy.
Since he started to go to school he had less time to play or just spend time with Aiba. Sho missed Aiba a lot but his father didn’t let him go to the park and play before he finished all his homework. And he got extra homework from his father too since the man wanted his to be the top student in the class. He said it was the least since he was born to be a Sakurai!
“Catch me!” Aiba shouted laughing happily and run off.
Sho chased him immediately. They run around in the park laughing and shouting happily.
Right at that time Aiba was chasing Sho but he was too busy not loosing Sho from his sight and didn’t pay attention where he goes and fell.
“Itai!” he cried in pain as he landed on the ground.
“Masaki! Are you alright?” Sho asked when he heard the cry and run to him immediately.
“Hai…”
Aiba sat up slowly but when he saw his bleeding legs he burst out crying.
“Don’t cry, Masaki! We go home and your mom will heal you in an instant!” Sho said and tried to wipe Aiba’s tears with his dirty hands but just made black, muddy stains on the younger boy’s face.
“But it hurts…” Aiba cried harder.
“Then I’ll take you home…” Sho said and kneeled on the ground to pick Aiba up and gave him a piggyback ride till his home. His neck was all wet from Aiba’s tears when they reached their house…
“Sho-chan! Sho-chan!”
Aiba run out of school crying straight where he used to meet up Sho to go home together.
“What’s wrong, Aiba-chan? Did you hurt somewhere?” Sho asked worried but Aiba just shook his head burying his face in Sho’s school shirt. “Then what happened?”
“The others in the class… laughed at me… because I can’t… ride the bicycle… yet I’m in second grade. They said… they won’t play… with me… cause I’m just… a baby… and everyone in class… can ride the bike already… just I can’t…” Aiba sniffed.
Sho got angry at this. How could they tell this to Masaki? To sweet, adorable, innocent Masaki?... It’s more than evil!...
“Ne, Aiba-chan! I’ll teach you how to ride it if you want me…” he said.
“Really? Can you teach me today?” Aiba asked hopeful eyes shining at Sho.
“But of course!” Sho said determined and took Aiba’s hand to go home.
When they reached home Sho started to teach him in their garden.
But it wasn’t successful at all. Most of the time Aiba fell after one or two meters and he usually dragged Sho with him too…
“Masaki! Come, honey, it’s late, we should go home! You can play with Sho-kun tomorrow!” Aiba’s mom said who came to pick up Aiba.
“Let me stay a bit more, mom! I’ll do it this time!” Aiba pleaded.
“Okay, you can try one more time but then we’re going! Managed or not” his mom said sternly.
“Yatta!” Aiba shouted happily and climbed back at the bike as if wouldn’t be covered in bruises everywhere.
And he really did it this time!
Aiba laughed and the bike swayed a bit but he did a few laps in the garden before jumped from the bike to run to Sho.
“Did you see this? I did it!” he said laughing. “Arigatou, Sho-chan!” he said and kissed his cheek…
Sho and Aiba was heading to the school exit to go home. Sho was talking non-stop about something he learnt today but Aiba didn’t understand it since the first minute so he didn’t pay attention at all.
He opened his shoe-locker and found a small, pink envelope on his shoes.
“Eh?” he took the letter from the locker but before he could open it, Sho grabbed it from his hand. He crumpled in angrily and threw in the nearest thrash can.
“Why did you do it, Sho-chan? I wanted to know what is in it!” Aiba said and looked at the older boy confused.
“It was nothing important. Now take your shoes and let’s go!” Sho ordered him and Aiba obeyed instantly not wanting to make Sho angrier (though he has no idea why Sho was angry in the first place…?)
The same scene repeated itself during the next week everyday. Sometimes it happened in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, sometimes both time. Sho always crumpled or tear apart Aiba’s letters before he had any chance to read them.
Aiba had enough at the second week.
“Sho-chan! Why are you doing this? These are my letters and I want to read them!” Aiba said.
“But I don’t want you to read what’s written in them…” Sho said pouting.
“Why, do you know what is in them?” Aiba asked and blinked innocently at him.
“Those are love letters, Masaki! Didn’t you notice all the girls in your class have a crush on you?” Sho asked disbelieving.
“Oh… well… no…” Aiba said shrugging.
“How could you don’t?” Sho said dumbfounded. Even he noticed it though he was in a totally different class than Aiba!
“Well… I didn’t care about them since… I’m in love with you, Sho-chan…” he said smiling widely…
“Ah! Kirei!” Aiba shouted and run straight to the shore.
Sho followed him rather slowly. It was indeed a beautiful sight but unlike to Aiba, it wasn’t the first time to him seeing the sea.
“Ne, Sho-chan! You think it’s beautiful too, right?” Aiba asked with sparkling eyes.
“Yeah, it is, but you’re much more beautiful…” he said and wrapped his arms around Aiba’s smaller frame.
“Mou! Sho-chan, don’t say things like this! It’s embarrassing!” Aiba said blushing and hit lightly Sho’s arm with his fist a few times.
“Why? It’s true…” Sho said defensively.
Then he smiled and wanted to take advantage that their parents aren’t there yet. He leant closer to kiss Aiba when…
“Hey, boys! Look at this way!” Sho’s father shouted to them.
Sho frowned at this but then turned toward his father sighing. The man stood there holding a camera waiting for the boys to turn that way.
Aiba laughed at Sho’s face then hugged Sho’s waist with one hand and turned toward the camera flashing a peace sign and smiling widely, happily…
“Here!”
Aiba blushed till the tip of his ears as he handed the small package to Sho. The box was poorly wrapped, containing more tape than paper and the bow on it stood (or more likely loafed) sideways…
“What’s this, Aiba-chan? My birthday was almost a month ago…” Sho said yet took the present.
Aiba pouted sadly.
“You don’t know what day is today?” he asked silently and lowered his head.
“No” Sho answered honestly but started to panic inside that he forgot the importance of today’s date… Wait, what is today’s date by the way?...
Aiba mumbled something which stopped Sho’s train of thoughts but he didn’t understand his words.
“What did you say?” he asked leaning closer.
“I said it’s Valentine… today…” Aiba repeated still facing to the floor.
“Valentine…” Sho mumbled then his eyes widened. He quickly tore the paper from the box and opened it. In it there was a small chocolate heart with an S and an M writing in it…
