Changing stock LJ images.

So, I started playing with the Smilies in Posts and Comments tutorial, as I noticed it was based off of mageboltrat's search and replace code, which I'd had experience with when I'd tested out Industrial Nippon. With IN I could specify an image I didn't like, offer a url to a replacement image, and when viewing things in that style, they were fixed to my alternative image. I had thought I could get that by working with the above tutorial, but then realized after I went through, it only effected the entry text and comment text, ignoring things like images attached to subjects, the icons on phone posts, and other things which have boring boring icons.

So, I was hoping someone might have an idea on how I can work with some version of this code to be able to change any LJ generated image within my style easily, or if there's a better way to fix some of the images without having to override ~everything~ and hard code it. The whole point of the search and replace code is to avoid having to hard code. If it helps, my theme layer is available here: 6263249. Thanks in advance!
